BULLETIN – Miracles do Happen – sao FINISHED BINDING TWO MORE QUILTS

I have to admit that I am inspired by my friends on the FABRICAHOLICS CHAT GROUP – every year we turn in our UFO’s and we encourage each other to actually FINISH THEM. Two weeks ago, I worked on binding two quilts and I am going to put the photos up here because on the YAHOO GROUP there was a problem with the members seeing those pictures.

AND THAT IS NOT ALL – YESTERDAY I finished binding two more…..SO IT IS TRULY CELEBRATION TIME FOR ME – because I LOVE binding so much that I save that task until I have a WHOLE STACK!!!

This first one is the Country Piecemaker’s BOM Mystery for 2009 designed by Catherine Etter – and quilted by Sara Parrish. I just love this one!

This one is CAROLINA CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA – and includes ONE OF THE BLOCKS from Bonnie K. Hunter’s Carolina Christmas Mystery Quilt. It is being held by my two friends, Fran and Catherine!

This next one I made with a Quilter’s Corner 30′s Club group – I named it my 30′s Club Star Quilt - now how is that for originality…..LOL

Ann Smith designed and hosted a Summer Mystery Quilt 2009 – and I just finished binding that one. I named it SUMMER STARS! OK – so my names aren’t that wonderful – but I FINISHED THE BINDING!!!!!! I especially LOVE the back – I love the scrappy backs – Bonnie K. Hunter has left her mark!!! Sara Parrish did the machine quilting on this one too!

Scrappers and Knitters had a HAPPY SATURDAY August 2010

The VA Scrappers and a couple of renegade knitters enjoyed Saturday chatting, sewing, eating, knitting, looking at pattern books, taking pictures and the best part – ta da – laughing! Sheddy came in from PA to entertain us with her new adventures in Florida. Who knows, MAYBE one day I will be posting pictures of our FLORIDA QUILTING RETREAT – well, maybe we will have a GARDENING OR BAKING RETREAT since those are REALLY Sheddy’s favorite hobbies! Yes, Sheddy was with us even though there are no pictures to substantiate my claim!

One of the reasons this was such a good day was that Catherine brought my Colonial Piecemaker’s Challenge Quilt in with the binding finished!!!! I was expecting to sew the binding on as one of my projects and while we had breakfast together I was lamenting that I had neglected to pack the correct color of thread. Catherine never let on that I wouldn’t NEED the thread! You can’t imagine how happy I was – and Catherine even added a little embellished bow train with the excess binding. I just love those extra touches that only the queen of embellishment can create.

Actually Saturday was a little bit like Christmas because Catherine brought me cat fabric from the Colonial Williamsburg white elephant table and the ATCs from July that I missed while I was in Missouri……and there was even some of my FAVORITE HOT TAMALES GUM IN THE BAG!

It was a happy day for sure AND I AM HAPPY TO SAY THAT I FINISHED BINDING ONE QUILT AND ALMOST FINISHED A SECOND ONE! The day was perfect – except we REALLY DID miss those who weren’t with us!

Finally I put the 30′s Club Star Quilt (a Quilter’s Corner 30′s Club Pattern) together. I had originally made extra small star blocks to put in where there are plain blocks, but in the end it was too busy – so now I have extra blocks to put somewhere else!

During the past two days of being SNOWED IN I had fun – I made a little SOUP (it was YUMMY) and I made homemade bread (it fell apart but it was WARM and ever so good) – I cleaned out some kitchen cabinets (such a feeling of accomplishment) and I SEWED……..YEAH.

I finished my latest CUTTING BEE project – my SECOND MILKY WAY QUILT! This one is for my grandangel Blake’s High School graduation this year. I was going to make all of the stars blue but at the last minute I decided to add a few burgundy and red stars in as well……TA DA….. (I know, I know – my FIRST MILKY WAY had blue and red stars in it too – OK – SO I LIKE RED AND BLUE STARS….and in my defense, this one has a BLUE outside border and my first one has a RED outside border!) LOL. Does anyone recognize any of their fabric in this quilt?

And I finished putting together my New Year’s Eve 2009 Mystery Quilt (Fabricaholics – designed by Ann Smith) – I am trying to decide on borders right now – but I am thinking one black small border, one orange medium border, and one large butterfly border……I am THINKING about it as we speak….. This one will be donated to the ICU Unit – via my Country Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild. I actually like the colors in this quilt – I just have this thing about butterflies. I know it is STRANGE but they look and ACT LIKE BUGS and this automatically puts them on my LIST OF NOT SO FAVORITE THINGS …. I am TRYING to like them……really TRYING! My friend, Catherine LOVES butterflies – I am trying but when I look at this quilt it just makes my stomach flip….honestly, it gives me REAL BUTTERFLIES IN MY STOMACH!

And….while I was thinking about borders, I made four more star blocks for my 30′s Club Quilt. It would have been finished, but I decided not to put in the PLAIN blocks but instead to put in more small star blocks…….so here you go – four more star blocks.

Carolina Christmas and other Quilty Things

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving – we sure did here in Midlothian, VA. Here is a photo of my DH being SILLY on Thanksgiving (what else is new?) and also a group photo of all of us just prior to indulging in the FABULOUS FEAST! We had a wonderful dinner – and lots of fun! You would never have guessed that there were six children and two dogs celebrating the day!

And to make the day even MORE PERFECT, Bonnie Hunter surprised us all by posting her STEP ONE for the Carolina Christmas Mystery Quilt on Thanksgiving night instead of the morning after. I was so excited that even though I was on my way to bed when I checked my e-mail, I printed out the instructions and decided to sew instead – sleep is overrated.

I finished all of my 192 Step 1 Two-sies and my 104 Half Square Triangles…..what fun! (It doesn’t take a lot to entertain me!)

So while I am at it – here are some other quilty things that have been going on. One of my friends, Sheddy – but this could have happened to any number of folks, mentioned that she had accidently cut into some 2 1/2″ strips that she had cut for binding……but forgot their intended purpose! I know that I have done this too UNTIL I hit upon a new method. Now when I finish a quilt top I make the binding and hang it on my SHAKER PEGS. Those Shakers were SO ORGANIZED – they inspire me. So….here is a shot of my bindings in waiting…..now all that I have to do is to REMEMBER which binding is for which quilt!

And here is my BACK for my Christmas Lights Quilt – another Bonnie Hunter Mystery – I think making a scrappy back from large squares (these are 15 1/2″ square) is my favorite Bonnie Back. My Carolina Christmas is with my awesome Sara – who is scheduled to start quilting on December 7. I can’t wait!!!

My grandangel, Sarah, and I ventured out on BLACK FRIDAY to do some shopping and we had a good time. The lines weren’t TOOOOO long! Even though I got in a bit of shopping, I also managed to do some sewing.

I am now caught up with my 30′s Club Star Quilt – here are my last two blocks…..and since I made an extra block I may go ahead and put it together before the last block pattern comes out next month. We will see if I get the URGE to do that! You never know about me!

And I am not quite sure that this THIRTIES SOMETHING block is going to be a quilt in progress – but it is possible. I bought and then LOST the templates for this quilt (it was on the cover of QUILTMAKER magazine 3 issues ago.) It is actually a beautiful quilt done in pastels and designed by Ann Champion. I JUST FOUND the template Thanksgiving day tucked SAFELY away in a sewing basket – go figure. I RE-CUT my blocks (there was an error in the directions for the center square in QUILTMAKER) and made the block.

The jury is still out as to whether it will be a quilt or an orphan block. I am not in love with my block but maybe it is because I used greens, lavendars and orange in the block and these aren’t my favorites. Any comments? After Sheddy told me to cut the center block a 2 1/8″ instead of 2 5/8″ square, it was fun to put together. CAN’T YOU JUST SEE ME TRYING TO FIT THE 2 5/8″ square in the center? It wasn’t a pretty picture!

I haven’t done a lot of quilting lately. It seems that I have been a bit preoccupied looking at the beautiful fall foilage in far away places – among other things!

So now seems like a good time to get caught up….here are a few of the things that I have been working on…..that I can show. I have a CHALLENGE QUILT finished for Hospitality Quilters - and it is a secret for now!

30′s Club Star Quilt

The September and October Blocks are finished – but wait – you say that you see not TWO but THREE BLOCKS. Well, I had a bit of spatial difficulty and since I had used authentic vintage 30′s fabric – I just had to do it over. So now I have an extra block!

Country Piecemaker’s BOM MYSTERY BLOCKS

The final two blocks of the Country Piecemaker’s Block of the Month Mystery Quilt are ready – and in December we will get the instructions for how to put it together!!! My embroidery skills were less than stellar so I abandoned making the Bunny Hill Quilt – however I did use the three blocks that I had made in this Mystery Quilt – I thought it was a great place to use these orphan blocks!!!!

Double Delight FINISHED

I am DELIGHTED to announce that I have finished my DOUBLE DELIGHT QUILT – this was designed by Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville.com and quilted by Sara Parrish. LOVE LOVE LOVE it! That is Oreo *the cat* peeking around the bottom corner of the quilt! The quilt FEELS so GOOD – it has bamboo batting in it and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it – I am enamored with the little 1 1/2″ squares throughout the quilt!

Star Struck Quilt

I took another quilt to Sara Parrish this weekend too. I FINALLY FINISHED my Star Struck Quilt (I took a class with Bonnie K. Hunter when she was at the Williamsburg Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild during the summer - 2008!!!) I was proud of myself for saving all of the little corners that you cut off in the process of making the blocks. I made pinwheel blocks and put them into both the border of my quilt top and I used them on my scrappy back……LOVE BONNIE K. HUNTER inspired scrappy backs! This is fabric left over from my Birth of a Sampler Quilt – Victorian Holiday – I think it is pretty!!!

My PEPTO CHATTANOOGA CHOO CHOO QUILT now has borders and is with my long arm quilter Sara – complete with a little label!!!!! I really like the border fabric that Susan picked out…..hot pink! I got the pattern from Augusta Cole’s CUTTING BEE in January but the fabric was all from my stash – I have been collecting pinks for awhile……and there is barely a dent in my pink fabric.

And Finally I did some creative work on my label – two YO YO’s and three buttons GLUED ON WITH FABRI-TAC covered the holes left by the basting stitches. Thanks to my VA SCRAPPER friends for coming up with this solution!!!

I didn’t have much free time this week – but I did manage to do my block for the Williamsburg Guild – Colonial Piecemaker’s for tomorrow. This is my JUNE BUG BLOCK……everyone that makes a block gets a chance to win all of the blocks.

I love what she designs and I have made all of her mystery quilts so far – so there is no stopping me now. Here is what I did on her Christmas Lights Mystery. LOL.

Despite a great deal of socializing and contemplation, I think that the folks at 30′s Club at Quilter’s Corner today got a lot of sewing done! We also shared ideas, laughed, and arranged our blocks that we had made thus far - we got our “therapy” for our quilting souls today!
