A Comfort Quilt Emerged During the Snow Storm

Posted By on March 27, 2011

Since we were ENJOYING a spring snowstorm today,  I decided it was a good time to be inside sewing.  A year or so ago, Susan (of Quilters Corner)  was cleaning out her sewing room and she gifted me with some of her unwanted scraps

….and in the bag I found a beautiful unfinished quilt top.  YEAH……it is now a COMFORT QUILT FOR JAPAN…..I whipped up a scrappy back and VOILA – it will soon be enjoyed by someone in need.    I named it the SS Kaleidoscope Comfort Quilt (SS for Susan and Shirley since it was a joint effort – she made the front and I made the back!)

SNOW in SPRING TIME March 27, 2011

Posted By on March 27, 2011

I don’t think there is anything quite as exciting as a snow storm in the spring time.

IT DID SNOW TODAY – and not for very long –  but for a little bit we had big fluffy flakes falling from the sky.  I thorough enjoyed it and couldn’t resist taking pictures!

This won’t go down in history as the great Midlothian, VA snowstorm – but it was fun for me!  Snow is, and will forever be, on my LIST OF FAVORITE THINGS!  Did you ever notice that it ALWAYS SNOWS on my blog?  If you get my blog automatically delivered to your e-mail you won’t see the snow – but if you go directly to my blog at www.shirleyannesheart.com you will see snow ALWAYS gently falling – even in the summer time!!!!

Oh yes……the pictures……

VA Scrappers March 2011

Posted By on March 27, 2011

I just love the VA Scrappers group – it seems like we spend half of our time sewing and half of our  time laughing.  Catherine was particularly witty at our March meeting on Saturday and every time anyone said ANYTHING she had a funny follow up – don’t know how she does it.  She was on a roll for sure!

Carmen made lots of progress on her quilt (we are all amazed at her beautiful handwork.)

And Vonnie came sporting a new hairdo – and a BEAUTIFUL Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt!  We enjoyed hearing about her new Bernina …and her new relationship too!  🙂

Catherine and I struggled making the covered rope for our BALI BOWLS (and I mean struggled – I even managed to get the rope tangled and Catherine managed to get it untangled!)  We will hopefully get these finished at our Powhatan Quilters meeting on Monday – April 4th (and I am stressing that HOPEFULLY part?)  I am pretty sure that this will be my first AND LAST Bali Bowl!  🙂

My great victory for Saturday was that I almost finished binding my CONNECT THE DOTS QUILT (a Judy Laquidara Mystery) ……love it when that happens!  Sara Parrish did a beautiful job quilting it!

Enjoy the pictures!

JARED TAKES A WIFE …. SORT OF

Posted By on March 24, 2011

I love Bonnie Hunter (www.quiltville.com) and I love her quilts.  One of my favorites is Jared Takes a Wife and the pattern is on her website.

I have a just made a MODIFIED version of Jared Takes a Wife…….it doesn’t have the sashing and cornerstones – but other than that, it is the same.

I named mine JB TAKES A WIFE because some of the plaids in it are from shirts that belonged to my mother and to my daddy.  IT IS CALLED

JB TAKES A WIFE #1 because there is eventually going to be FOUR MEMORY QUILTS

(one for each of my brothers and one for myself.)

Everytime I go to Kansas City I stare LONGINGLY at my Daddy’s shirts….he has the BEST RED AND NAVY BLUE PLAID ONES and I keep hoping he will get tired of one or two and let me take them home!  🙂

Here is my JB TAKES A WIFE #1  – and Sara Parrish is going to do the quilting – I am so excited!  (The cat inspecting the back of the quilt is none other than TONTO MORRIS!  My DH named this cat!)

Quilts for Japan

Posted By on March 24, 2011

I have been trying to get some quilts ready to send to Japan….but oh how I dread doing the actual quilting part……I have quilted 3 or 4 now and each looks worse than the others…..I am just NOT GOOD AT IT and I am embarrassed to put my name on something that I am ashamed of.    I feel like a donation quilt should look nice……and so I am reluctant to PRACTICE ON THEM!

…..so I was just WONDERING…..does anyone know of any long arm quilter who would be willing to do the quilting as part of their donation to the cause if I do the piecing and provide the batting?

I have three ready to be quilted now….and I will have one more by the weekend.  If there isn’t anyone out there donating their quilting time then I will either decide to TRY ONE MORE TIME to quilt them myself or just pay someone to quilt them ….. but I thought it was worth asking …. just in case…..:)

Comfort Quilts for Japan wants the donation quilts by April 30.
