Raising Cane

When I was posting my QUILTY THINGS for this week, I totally forgot to include my quilt top for Dorothy Young’s Mystery – RAISING CANE.  It is crib sized and if my neice has a little girl, this will be her baby quilt.  The back will be out of the same red and white fabric that I used on the front.   You can’t tell in the picture but the black and white checked border has sweet little red hearts in it.

Now I need to make a baby quilt for a boy – just in case……….I personally think it is SO MUCH FUN to know ahead of time – boy or girl, but my neice and her husband have one boy and one girl already – so they figured they were  already READY FOR EITHER and they wanted to go for the BIG SURPRISE AT THE END!  So, I am going to be ready for the big surprise too!  :):)

I am going to go “SHOPPING” in my closet where I keep the fabric that I already have (AKA my stash)  to come up with something cute for a little boy quilt!

QUILTY THINGS IN SAO’S WORLD

I did someting NEW this year – I took a hand quilting class last Sunday at Quilter’s Corner!  I CANNOT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO TAKE PICTURES.   I guess I was really having a GOOD TIME!  I am excited about learning to do this very special and age-old quilting technique though and after a few (thousand) hours of practice I should be pretty good at it.  LOL.  Now I just need to finish my Grandmother’s Flower Garden top so that I can hand quilt it!

I haven’t been called to substitute teach all week so I have been getting caught up on errands – and sewing!!!

I now have two quilts ready for quilting .  The first is my Carolina Christmas Star Quilt with a my favorite BONNIE HUNTER-INSPTIRED scrappy back……..

Carolina Christmas Star

Carolina Christmas Star Back

and my Carolina Christmas Poinsettia Quilt…….also with a scrappy back.  It takes a couple of days to cut the squares and sew them together for the back – but I think it is interesting to choose the fabric and it is fun to do.  I like the backs with the scrappy squares the best!!!

Carolina Christmas Star Poinsettia

Carolina Christmas Poinsettia Back

These two quilts were made with the two different blocks from Bonnie K. Hunter’s latest Carolina Christmas Mystery Quilt….I just decided to turn mine into two twin sized quilts instead of one very large one.

I really like the scrappy backs made with 12 1/2″ squares.  I sure have used lots of fabric that I had in my stash – so even though I orginally PAID for the fabric – it FEELS free since I didn’t buy anything new!  LOL. It is so easy to trick myself!!!  :):)

In the Carolina Christmas Poinsettie back I used a lot of my STRIP SETS that I made for my borgello border for my BIRTH OF A SAMPLER QUILT – I guess I just got carried away and made too many.  I wondered what I could do with them – and then the inspiration just set in!!   I cut the strips into 12 1/2″ squares – and voila I had a back!

The last thing that I did this week was to make the top of Oscar’s 2nd Birthday wallhanging.  My SIL is his God Momma and she is giving it to him for his birthday – I hope she likes it!  I had fun picking out the fabric – WITH SUSAN’S HELP at QUILTER’S CORNER.  Susan always knows just the right fabric that I am looking for!!!!  🙂  Some of you may recognize the pattern – it is Bonnie K. Hunter’s Christmas Lights Quilt Pattern (in miniature) from her 3-part mystery in Quiltmaker magazine!

Kerry – I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS!!!!  🙂

Joey’s graduation quilt – the one that I made (in part) from Joey’s undershorts – was a big hit.  He had fun looking for the fabric from the undershorts that he remembered!  It is hard to believe that Joey has graduated from high school and TODAY (January 6) he left for his freshman year at  Missouri State University!

Joey's FOREVER PLAID GRADUATION QUILT

And Eric got his graduation quilt.  Eric is a psychology major at Missouri State University……isn’t that so nice – two brothers going to college at the same school!

My parents liked their NEW HOUSE QUILTS…..thank you to Sara Parrish for HURRYING to get my Thimbleberries 3’s Company Quilt quilted in time to take it  to KC to live in the den at the new house!

And my parents got my Celtic Knotwork Quilt as a bedspread for their spare room bed!  It just fits the bed!

Before I went to Kansas City for the move I gave my DH Max my MILKY WAY QUILT for Christmas – he loves it!

AND TA DA – while I was in Kansas City playing like I was a member of MERTIN THE MOVING VAN CREW (did anyone ever read the book MERTIN THE MOVING VAN to their children?) I started making a sweater.  I got One and a little bit of another front part  finished.  THANKS CATHERINE FOR THE WONDERFUL PATTERN OF BEAUTIFUL CROCHETED ART!

Some of MY FAVORITE MEMORIES from the MOVE in Kansas City

Posted By on January 6, 2010

Just for the record when I talk about Kansas City, I am referring to the MISSOURI side…..pronounced MISSOUREEEEE  )

I learned some new things and I LOVE LEARNING NEW THINGS and so these go my my list of FAVORITE MEMORIES.

I learned how to put up mini-blinds….

It took a bit longer that the 15 Min. that the instructions promised!

I learned to install a toilet paper holder……….

This is the Toilet Paper Holder - BEFORE IT FELL OFF!

….and here I am REALLY PUTTING UP a towel bar (not as easy as it looks!)  By the way,  if you lose the screw you are in BIG TROUBLE….:):)  Let me tell you, these screws are VERY TINY!!!!

sao putting up a towel rack.....

It was LOTS of fun cleaning out the attic – such treasures we found!!!!  Some things we found were really antique treasures – but we had to laugh at the pair of chopsticks up there – wonder who was saving those – in the attic!?

CHOP STICKS IN THE ATTIC?

ATTIC TREASURES

AND….my glasses broke while moving – yes and these were my SPARE GLASSES because my good new ones broke BEFORE I left on this trip….can you believe it?!    Now you are probably WONDERING why I am talking about broken glasses in the middle of a blog entry about my FAVORITE MEMORIES from the move (some of you are thinking – that sao needs to get a life!!!!)

Glasses got repaired at COSTCO

Well we went to Costco to get my glasses fixed and while we were there we ATE – yes we ATE AT COSCO – not at the Country Club Plaza – but Costco.  My sister-in-law, Elaine, and sister-in-love, Chris, and brother Fred were laughing our heads off.  Not only were we eating at COSTO but my necklace broke – they were little magnetic beads….and they went bouncing all over Costco….    BELIEVE ME MAGNETIC BEADS BOUNCE HIGH AND FAR ON CONCRETE FLOORS.  So we were giggling and crawling in the aisles trying to catch beads…..and we were trying to act dignified!

Our FINE DINING EXPERIENCE - with NO BEADS on sao!

Laughter is great for mental health!  We managed to do a lot of laughing – let me tell you.  Perhaps the funniest part of the move of all was when the people who were buying Fred and Elaine’s house unexpectedly brought in four carloads of neighbors and relatives a day early……they brought in things – like boxes and dresser drawers….and they filled the pantry with food…..yes and had a picnic while we were in the process of packing and cleaning.  They were so happy to be having their first meal in the house!  Don’t you just love to see people having fun and celebrating life?  We, on the other hand, felt a little awkward and someone’s sister even came in and asked Elaine and I if WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE THERE!  LOL

After emptying the attic, we were getting ready to leave so I went searching for Abby their dog and she was SLEEPING in one of the new owner’s dresser drawers!  Too funny!  (I promise, it really was funny but maybe you had to be there and be very tired and very cold to see the humor!)

Abby camping out in the new owner's dresser drawer!

This drawer belongs to a high school boy – and I just hope that he doesn’t have a girlfriend with dark hair who would NOT UNDERSTAND why blonde hairs were on his undershirts!!!  And, of course the poor guy would be TOTALLY innocent and would REALLY have NO IDEA how the blonde hairs got there!

We took out time to toast to the NEW YEAR….HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010 – it seems like only yesterday that we were thinking about what would happen when 2000 began!!!

Happy New Year 2010

….and we listened to my Daddy play the organ…..

Daddy Playing the Organ

I got to see my new grand neice or grand nephew *the BABY BUMP* who visited with mommy Amanda and BIG SISTER, Tara Lynn…..

Big Brother, Preston, took a car ride on Great Uncle Fred…..

Preston Drives the UNCLE FRED CAR!

AND we managed to take time to get our semi-annual SILLY BROTHER PICTURE…….these are my three goofy brothers…..they are wearing two VERY BEAUTIFUL purses that I crocheted for my mother…….

sao's THREE GOOFY BROTHERS

…and they have managed to spread the silly gene to yet another generation – nephew Joey joins the SILLY PICTURE CREW!

Four funny guys!

We did manage to take a serious family picture…..

Here are all of the Albertsons who came to celebrate the move to the two new houses!

Did we have fun, or what!!!!
