Quilty and Hooker News – and INSPIRATION 11 8 09

Posted By on November 8, 2009

I got several things PARTIALLY put together this week……and I guess PARTIAL is better than nothing – right!  I decided this was my week to work on UFOS….and so I did.  I got 3 quilt tops together and one hooker project partially on the way to UFO status!

MODA SELVAGES – started November 2008

I got my Moda Selvages BOM quilt together – here it is in PARTIAL PROGRESS!  I liked this better when I got it together than I thought I would!!

MAIN STREET HOUSES

I got my Main Street Houses put together – this was a block exchange and, yes, I had trouble appliquing those little berries – and the center of the flowers.  I think they will become represented by BUTTONS once the quilting is completed.  I made the spring block  (flowers,) Marla made the summer block (stars and the eagle,)  Susan made the autumn block (pumpkins and acorns,) and Chris made the winter block (berries and snowflake.)  I am so happy to have this one together.

CHICKENS, CHECKS, and CHERRIES

I got another top together – an exchange with friends Sheddy, Marla, Pam, Susan and me!  That is us – the five chickens!  I haven’t made the back yet – but that will probably get done sometime in the near future.  I think this is pretty cute – it is small – perhaps a wall hanging or a table topper?

THIMBLEBERRIES 2009

I got blocks 11 and 12 finished – and their filler components…….I guess I just wasn’t in the mood to follow directions because I changed the pattern for Block 11 – and then I changed the colors for Block 12………and I guess I was REALLY feelying like a rebel because I then decided I wanted to put the whole thing together in some new and different arrangement – so stay tuned for the final product.  It won’t look like the “REAL” Thimbleberries 3’s Company arrangement though, that I can tell you (I know because I have it partially sewn together!)

LOCKER HOOKER NEWS

I learned to do Locker Hooking from Catherine Friday night….she is a good teacher and I had fun being in her class at QA…….Carmen did too……..Catherine is very talented and creative and I am always impressed with her unique artistry!

I am making the candle mat but I really want to learn traditional rug hooking so I can make something like what Catherine is holding in the picture below.  It is WONDERFUL!

It is fun to learn something new – but I felt like I had SIX THUMBS!

I tried my hand at embroidery this week  too – but NOTE THERE IS NO PICTURE.  I don’t have the “hang” of it yet.  Soon, and very soon, I think I will have it figured out!

FUTURE QUILT INSPIRATION

I saw this black, white and red quilt – A KAREN DU MONT PATTERN – at Quilting Adventures and I think this might be something that I am inspired to do in the future……love it!  I am so fascinated with the checkerboard pieced border!

The Queen of England with the U. S. Presidents

Posted By on November 3, 2009

I thought that this was VERY interesting.  We have had all of these presidents in the United States during the time that the Queen of England has reigned!!

AND…. a little bit more trivia thanks to GOOGLE!

Why did President Lyndon B. Johnson never meet Britain’s Elizabeth II, making him the only seated US President that the Queen did not meet during her reign?

I’m not sure if I’ll get in trouble for answering this without a specific linked reference, but I read once that it was just a matter of circumstance that their paths never crossed, and not a case of a specific foreign policy by either government, nor a personal issue. One can make a case that foreign policy might have played a small part though, but I KNOW speculation like that will get me in trouble so I’ll refrain from that.

The Queen would’ve assuredly met Johnson if she had attended JFK’s funeral, but she was pregnant at the time and could not make the trip. Prince Philip did attend and met Johnson. The subsequent birth of Edward in 1964 and the raising of her other children kept her from visiting abroad regularly in the 1960’s as much as other decades. She did not visit the U.S. between 1957 and 1976.

Johnson, a great traveler within the U.S., only occasionally took trips outside the country (unlike other Presidents) and never made a scheduled trip to Europe. Johnson was no foriegn policy expert, (same can be said for his British counterpart Wilson) and so he chose to focus his Presidency on domestic issues, with the notable exception of Vietnam, and look how that turned out lol.

I haven’t done a lot of quilting lately.  It seems that  I have been a bit preoccupied looking at the beautiful fall foilage in far away places – among other things!

So now seems like a good time to get caught up….here are a few of the things that I have been working on…..that I can show.  I have a CHALLENGE QUILT finished for Hospitality Quilters  – and it is a secret for now!

THIMBLEBERRIES 2009

The September and October Blocks are finished – but wait – you say that you see not TWO but THREE BLOCKS.  Well, I had a bit of spatial difficulty and since I had used authentic vintage 30’s fabric – I just had to do it over.  So now I have an extra block!

Country Piecemaker’s BOM MYSTERY BLOCKS

The final two blocks of the  Country Piecemaker’s Block of the Month Mystery Quilt are ready – and in December we will get the instructions for how to put it together!!!  My embroidery skills were less than stellar so I abandoned making the Bunny Hill Quilt – however I did use the three blocks that I had made in this Mystery Quilt – I thought it was a great place to use these orphan blocks!!!!

Double Delight FINISHED

I am DELIGHTED to announce that I have finished my DOUBLE DELIGHT QUILT – this was designed by Bonnie K. Hunter of Quiltville.com and quilted by Sara Parrish.  LOVE LOVE LOVE it!  That is Oreo *the cat* peeking around the bottom corner of the quilt!  The quilt FEELS so GOOD – it has bamboo batting in it and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it – I am enamored with the little 1 1/2″ squares throughout the quilt!

Star Struck Quilt

I took another quilt to Sara Parrish this weekend too.  I FINALLY FINISHED my Star Struck Quilt (I took a class with Bonnie K. Hunter when she was at the Williamsburg Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild during the summer – 2008!!!)  I was proud of myself for saving all of the little corners that you cut off in the process of making the blocks.  I made pinwheel blocks and put them into both the border of my quilt top and I used them on my scrappy back……LOVE BONNIE K. HUNTER inspired scrappy backs!  This is fabric left over from my Birth of a Sampler Quilt – Victorian Holiday – I think it is pretty!!!

Sarah’s 2nd Cat Quilt

And last but not least, I helped Grandangel Sarah 10 put together her 2nd Cat Quilt.  She QUILTED it all by herself.  I only gave directions on this one.   She was so proud!!!  She sure had fun choosing the decorative stitching on my Brother sewing machine!!!

30’s Club at Quilter’s Corner October, 2009

Posted By on October 25, 2009

I got inspired today – yes, AGAIN!!!  After looking at Marla and Cathy’s handwork and after seeing Joy’s BEAUTIFUL embroidered tea cup blocks, I think I am ready to try my hand at embroidery.  I bought some SULKY embroidery thread – and it isn’t like traditional embroidery floss that you have to separate (like in the OLDEN DAYS) .. yes, it just comes off the spool ready to use.  🙂

********** Quilter’s Corner now has embroidery supplies!!!! **************

And another inspiration hit me – I have also decided to make the Curvy 30’s quilt!  By the way, it DOES HAVE A NAME but for now it is the CURVY 30’s quilt!  🙂  Note Sheddy’s block in the pictures below.

Here are some of the pictures of our fun today – and yes, I did edit (*in case you noticed that the picture that I took of YOU is missing!!)
