What is on my Design Wall, September 19, 2011

Posted By on September 18, 2011

I have a LOT on my DESIGN FLOOR this week …. and actually my DESIGN FLOOR is getting packed into project boxes and is going on the road…..Thursday through Sunday is the Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Retreat in Williamsburg and I am really looking forward to it!

SO HERE IS WHAT I WILL BE DOING

First – the Spiderweb Quilt needs to be sewn together.  It is my UFO for September – so I am going to focus on this first!

The Spider Quilt needs to be put together!

Second  – the Roll Roll Cotton Boll Jr. Quilt needs the final borders…..one pieced and another small blue outer border.

Third – the Chunky Churndash Quilt made from my parents’ shirts needs some more blocks.

Fourth – the Road to Brownwood Quilt needs binding.

Fifth – the  Hugs and Kisses Quilt needs binding.

Sixth – the Hidden Pinwheels Quilt needs binding….  I am only showing a picture of one block!

Seventh – I need more Hexies for my Scrappy Grandmother’s Flower Garden Quilt.

Eighth….I need to cut out the first step of the WORMS AND JELLY ROLL MYSTERY QUILT.  This will be made from greens – and even though this is my VERY LAST most  favorite color  I have somehow accumulated lots of bits and pieces of fabric… so I am going to make this mystery quilt as a charity quilt for the wildfire victims in Texas.   AND…should you want to sew along on this Mystery Quilt, you can join the  Quilter’s Club of America free right now……

Ninth – I plan to cut out and start on Bonnie Hunter’s Cheddar Challenge Quilt.  I have no pictures yet  – I just ordered the fabric from Hancock’s of Paducah Saturday…..will it get here in time????  In case you want to join this challenge – here is the link!

Tenth – I need to put on the outer border and make a piano keys border for my curved log cabin quilt.

Do you think this is too much?  Well, I have to pack enough hand work just in case my sewing machine breaks.  One time, while on retreat, my sewing machine broke – and a SECOND sewing machine that I had taken “just in case” also broke.  So now I take enough hand work to keep me busy should I end up with NO SEWING MACHINE!!!

It is DEFINITELY A LOT!   After looking at this post, I was so embarrassed by my APPARENT lack of ability to predict how much could be accomplished in 3 1/2 days that I didn’t even mention that I was taking a Halloween hand quilting project too……LOL.

And…….Catherine is expecting for there to be room in my car for her projects too!   I may need to RETHINK this plan….:):)

You will see NEXT WEEK how much I really got done!

Richmond Modern Quilt Guild Meeting September 16, 2011

The Richmond Modern Quilt Guild met tonight  in Midlothian, VA  and I can’t even find words to describe the creativity that I observed during SHOW AND TELL…..really amazing.  I am SO OUT OF MY LEAGUE with this group – I enjoy it, but I will never share anything that I have done…..LOL.

We also had three demonstrations/presentations of methods to dye fabric…..I just might have to get into this……the fabrics are just glorious!  Tiffany, Catherine and Cheryl all shared their techniques for creating unique fabric/and or t-shirts!

I hope you enjoy the pictures as much as I enjoyed BEING THERE!!!!

What’s on my Design Floor September 12, 2011

My SPIDER WEB quilt is growing and is still on my DESIGN FLOOR (I have a feeling it will be here for another couple of weeks!)  The pieces aren’t sewn together, but at least you can see the spider webs forming!

I also have a Richmond Modern Quilt Guild round robin to work on – but that is TOP SECRET until the big reveal in December.

That’s not all – I am helping Grandangel Sarah make a RAG QUILT.  We decided to use denim and flannel without batting in the middle.  I think this will be a good plan and the finished product won’t be too heavy!  I am using recycled jeans for the denim squares.  Sarah is having fun using my BROTHER Project Runway machine and is making fancy stitching for the quilting.  I think it is going to be really cute!

Here is the flannel side of the block with one side of the stitching…..

I like using these hair clippies to keep the two layers of fabric from slipping – it works better than using pins!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my DIL, Lil September 12!

THE HELP – great movie

Posted By on September 5, 2011

I recommend that you go see the movie THE HELP!  It was so well done and deeply moving is the best description that I can imagine.  I didn’t just cry (like we all do at movies sometimes) – I had a deep feeling of nausea and a sobbing reaction that comes with the realization of how social and racial injustice impacted so many people.  I am thinking that this might be one of the BEST movies that I have ever seen.

These are some of the pictures from the HELP MOVIE website…..that acting was just wonderful…..I can’t imagine anyone doing a better job than Emma Stone, Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer!

Here is a synopsis from the HELP MOVIE.COM website

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed —even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times.

Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

I think I just might have to go buy the book today – WOW…..If you haven’t seen this movie – DO IT!!!!!  I give it 5 stars out of a possible 4!!!  I may go see this movie again – and when it comes out on DVD I hope it ends up in my Christmas stocking….Santa, are you listening?
