Cakes are DONE, People are FINISHED – what about QUILTS – are they DONE DONE?

Posted By on May 30, 2011

While conducting  research at CAL STATE UNIVERSITY for my thesis, I was testing the memory of older and younger adults for learning new word processing procedures.  One morning, I peeked into the laboratory cubicle and very politely asked one of my research participants,  “Are you done, Mrs. _____”?

SHE (being an 85 year old retired English teacher) looked at me and replied, “My dear, cakes are DONE; people are FINISHED.”

I will never forget that as long as I live!!!  I thanked her for enlightening me – and I have NEVER asked ANYONE if they are DONE with ANYTHING since that moment (although after consulting a book on grammar, I discovered that DONE in reference for people is NOW OK!)

This morning I was getting ready to post pictures of two quilts that are DONE DONE……or are they FINISHED?  Anyway they are COMPLETED and USABLE and I know for sure that I am happy.

These are two from the Eleanor Burns pattern that features patterns for three quilts from the same jelly roll.  I would tell you the NAME of the pattern but I am unable to locate the pattern!  🙂  LOL  Obviously I added additional fabric to the jelly roll for fillers and for the borders, binding, and backing!

Happy Spools

I named this first quilt HAPPY SPOOLS at Judy C in North Carolina’s suggestion!  I like that name!

Twice as Nice or Eleanor Burns Scrap Quilt #2

This one APPARENTLY has TWO NAMES because I cannot decide.  So I literally named it TWICE AS NICE OR ELEANOR BURNS SCRAP QUILT #2.

The THIRD ONE  is named Eleanor Burns Scrap Quilt #3 and it is NOT DONE DONE – or is it NOT COMPLETED?  Are there any English authorities out there?  HELP.

ANYWAY, regardless of how I say it, this last Eleanor Burns quilt from the jelly roll does not have its binding on  – so it is NOT USUABLE YET!  🙂

One thing that I know FOR SURE, is that this Ribbon Weave Quilt (from Augusta Cole’s CUTTING BEE) is going into the mail tomorrow for someone in Joplin.  I was going to send the small Eleanor Burns crib quilts, but decided that a large quilt would be better.  I just washed it and will be sending it to Judy Laquidara tomorrow.

Ribbon Weave (Superbowl Stash Quilt)

If you are ABLE to send a quilt to help the folks in Joplin – go to www.patchworktimes.com and click on the HELP JOPLIN tab at the top.  Judy will be personally giving the quilts to people who she KNOWS will NEED, LOVE, and CHERISH them.  She needs the quilts by July 4th.

If you can’t send a quilt and are able to send a check for $25 made out to THE AMERICAN RED CROSS, you can find Judy’s address on her website.  She would like the checks by June 7 and she will DELIVER THEM to the JOPLIN RED CROSS on June 8th.  I like this idea because there is no concern about the funds or the quilts getting where they are SUPPOSED to be!  If you are able to send a check, you will be entered into a drawing to win one of Judy Laquidara’s quilts!  🙂  Her quilts are WONDERFUL!

HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY………

I am going to work on a red, white and blue Quilt of Valor quilt

today to honor someone who has served our country……and I am also going to go to the pool to swim.

YEAH, summer is here and it will be HOT HOT HOT here in VA this week!  🙂

VA Scrappers May, 2011

Posted By on May 28, 2011

Today was a wonderful day.  I always have a good time when I get together with my VA SCRAPPER friends – but today was even better than usual.   We sewed at Mt Pisgah like we always do, but for some reason it was absolutely hilarious today!

We all left with that good feeling that comes from being with good friends, eating good food *THANK YOU CARMEN*, laughing a lot, watching it rain, taking pictures of feet, sharing fabric and SHOW AND TELLS, burning fabric, and accomplishing our artistic goals!  ONE OF US GOT TWO QUILTS BOUND!

I thought everyone had on beautiful shirts today!!!  Look, Carmen even matches her fabric (let me rephrase that – CARMEN’S SHIRT matched her fabric)  – and her beautiful green shirt just glowed under her OTT LIGHT……and that OTT LIGHT came in handy when I lost my VERY TINY NEEDLE ON THE FLOOR!

Carmen matched her fabric

Catherine wearing her favorite color

Well, I don’t actually know for a fact that this is Catherine’s favorite color – but I’ll  bet that it is in her top five…..and she is actually wearing a necklace that she DID NOT MAKE…..her DH bought it for her when they were dating – many moons ago.

Vonnie's shirt matches her MICHE BAG!!!

No pressure, but Vonnie asked me when I was going to have the Miche party.  I just might do that when my DD and her family go on vacation this summer – provided that Catherine will stage it for me…..she is the ultimate party planner!

Love this shirt Patsy - OF COURSE WE HAVE FABRIC!!!!

Patsy brought a big bag of fabric for us to go through – and so did Carmen……WHAT FUN….we even had our own YARD SALE only it was not in the yard and it was not for sale…….HM…..we had our own FLOOR FABRIC GIVE AWAY!!!

OK….and then there was me!  I don’t think I had on a great shirt today……but here I am anyway!  Just as a matter of curiosity – do you all think that I look like a HIPPIE?

sao

I can’t explain it,  but I REALLY like to take pictures of feet…..it isn’t because of anything weird – I PROMISE – I just think feet look happy – especially when they INCLUDE COLORFUL NAIL POLISH and when they are photographed in circles!

sao, Vonnie and Patsy

Patsy's Nail ART

OK – so the INSPIRATION for the feet pictures came from Patsy – she had on wonderful sandals and she had some fancy nail art that she did herself!  I promise – you would have had fun if you would have been there today!!!!

My Favorite Weather - RAIN

I took time to run to the window and take a picture of the rain……LOVE IT…..as long as it doesn’t produce flooding or is not accompanied by monster winds!

HAPPY RAIN splashes

Carmen was REALLY AWESOME today – not only did she arrive at 8:30 AM, but she also brought a PARTY.  She made WONDERFUL CHICKEN SOUP (Alex Anderson’s recipe – and I hope she sends that recipe to me)  – and I really LOVED the jalapenos  and black corn chips too!  This was a REAL PARTY complete with a tablecloth and REAL SPOONS!  We were so HAPPY about the ice too *see, it doesn’t take a lot to make us happy!  THIS WAS SONIC ICE!

Thanks Carmen - LOVED the table cloth and the ICE TOO!

YUM

Alex Anderson's recipe

I wish I had MORE right now

I think I MIGHT have eaten 10 slices of JALAPENOS!

sao did some binding

I finished two quilts out of three designed by Eleanor Burns – all three quilts were made out of one jelly roll with added fabric for borders, binding and backs.

Here is the second one….Karen Murphy quilted both of them……notice the wonderful bird houses that she QUILTED into the white blocks!

I am SO HAPPY that I got two quilts bound…..that is a great accomplishment for me!

What did Catherine do?  Well, she made a wonderful flower out of several layers of fabric – and we ALL LIKED IT….especially the part when she MELTED the edge of the fabric with a lighted match.  WE WERE ALL HOLDING OUR BREATH – HOPING THAT THE FIRE ALARMS WERE NOT SET OFF.  Had we burned down the church, I doubt that they would have allowed us to come back.

AND NOW….ta da…..CATHERINE burns the flower’s edges!

Vonnie gave her the matches

HOLD YOUR BREATH.....

SHE DID IT!

I know that I BREATHED a thankful sigh of relief.  I could just see that fabric going up in flames….but Catherine KNEW what she was doing!  THANKFULLY!

As you can see, we had a great time today!

AND…..HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL……..and THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SERVING IN THE MILITARY NOW AND WHO HAVE SERVED  IN THE PAST.  What a wonderful sacrifice……..we appreciate you!

Can and Will you help the people in Joplin, MO?

Posted By on May 25, 2011

If you are able and willing to help – I know of a secure way.   The folks in Joplin, MO are suffering – many of lost EVERYTHING in the recent tornados that have ravaged through their town demolishing their homes.

My online friend and quilt designer, Judy Laquidara of www.patchworktimes.com is collecting money for the LOCAL RED CROSS.

If you send a check to her for $25 made out to the AMERICAN RED CROSS she will enter you in a chance to win a quilt…..Shadow stars…..this is from her WEEKEND QUILTS book.  Judy’s address is on her website and I have given the link below.

Shadow Stars from Judy Laquidara's Weekend Quilts book

Judy shops in Joplin and her medical providers are there.  Since she KNOWS the people there, she has offered to deliver quilts to those who she KNOWS NEEDS and WILL CHERISH them.  SO……if you have one that you can spare, it would be a GOOD THING.

GO TO www.patchworktimes to find out how to help!

THANK YOU!

JUST A SIMPLE QUESTION

Posted By on May 24, 2011

Is there anything sweeter than a grandangel turning  ELEVEN years old (May 25)  – with curly hair, blue eyes and below holding my ONE AND ONLY KNITTED DINOSAUR…

….which leads me to the next question…….if I can knit a 5  foot plus dinosaur, why do I NOT HAVE A PAIR OF KNITTED SOCKS FINISHED YET!!!!

Could it BE that it is BECAUSE the first sock looks a little silly?  I will get the other sock figured out!!!!  I MUST get it finished by Halloween because I NEED A PAIR OF ORANGE SOCKS to wear with my witch costume!!!  :):)

What is on my DESIGN WALL?

Posted By on May 23, 2011

I don’t ACTUALLY have a design wall – but I will show you what is on my DESIGN FLOOR this week.

It is sao’s ROAD TO BROWNWOOD QUILT (a Judy Laquidara design – the pattern is on her website at www.patchworktimes.com)  Last week I made the border blocks and the other borders *it seems like that always takes me a LONG TIME.  I love pieced borders.

Now, this week,  I have to make the back and binding…..and VOILA, it is ready to be quilted!

sao's Road To Brownwood

AND…..ta da…..also on my design floor (to admire because I made these last week) …..

My first ever POSTCARDS for the RMQG swap in June.  They are fabric on the front and scrapbook paper on the back…….with FAST2FUSE in the middle to make them stiff and ready to mail!  Our CHALLENGE was to make them seasonal….and so *as you can guess* mine are fall.  I figured EVERYONE would choose Spring or Summer – so I decided to be different.  I love FALL and WINTER too – and came pretty close to putting snowpeople on mine.  LOL
