VCQ May, 2011 Richmond (Show and Tell)

Posted By on May 16, 2011

At the end of the VCQ day – we all gathered to share what we had done during the day (or previously!)  The workshop presentations were especially fun because since we could only participate in ONE, we got to see what the other folks were doing!

The quilts of  valor were fabulous and the cause is certainly noble.  I can’t even imagine losing a child in the service of our country and I really think those people who made quilts for the family are so nice!  We heard a story about one family who opened their quilt every night and each family memory picked the scrappy block that was their favorite from “DADDY’S QUILT” – isn’t that a sweet story of how a QV brings a special family-memory-time ?

I hope you enjoy the SHOW AND TELL!  (I haven’t labeled the pictures with names – except for a couple – because I don’t know all of the names yet – this WAS my first meeting.  I will have to think of ANOTHER excuse a year from now….:))

Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild – Williamsburg, VA May, 2011

Today was a beautiful day……sunny, cool…….perfect.  It was a great day to go to Williamsburg and be inspired by all of the beautiful quilts in show and tell!

Joyce and Sherry gave us a preview of all of the upcoming programs and we got a GREAT LAUGH out of her faux pas…….”If it is August, it must be Augusta Cole!”  AND…..she wants us to bring our CRAP QUILTS —- oops SCRAP QUILTS…..to this meeting……we loved it!  (YES, she really said this AND YES, she is blushing!)

Sherry and Joyce shared upcoming program highlights!

Debby Kratovil was our guest today and OH MY, did we ever learn a lot!  Here are my TOP FOUR THINGS THAT I LEARNED!

Debbie Kravotil

1.  It is perfectly OK to attach binding to a quilt with your machine!

2.  You can add a WIDE BINDING (3 1/2:”) and sew it to the back of the quilt and flip it to the front – and VOILA, it will look like a little border!  CLEVER!

3.  Instead of doing inset seams you can put seams in your half square triangles…..I am not sure this makes sense, BUT I KNOW WHAT I MEAN!

4.  Paper piecing works great for making crisp, clean star points!

AS USUAL, Catherine entertained us with her product report – loved the little FLOCKED fabric strip holder.  Did you notice the fantastic DOLL NECKLACE that she was wearing?  She made this!!!!

Cute FLOCKED Hangar for your STRIPS and BINDINGS!

Catherine also shared the baby quilt that I made and that Karen Murray quilted with words of encouragement…..why did she share it instead of me you ask?  BECAUSE Catherine is so fluent and clever and entertaining and we love to hear from her!  🙂

We had wonderful show and tells – of the NUT TUB CHALLENGE and from Catherine’s ART QUILT CLASS!

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Posted By on May 6, 2011

Yes, I have been quilting – just haven’t put any posts on my blog about my progress lately.

But here is what’s ON MY DESIGN WALL: well, make that my DESIGN FLOOR….lol  🙂

FIRST:

Judy Laquidara’s ROAD TO BROWNWOOD……..I have completed everything up to and through INSTRUCTIONS #4……..and I am loving it.  I cannot believe that Judy is working on  this quilt (and sharing the instructions on her blog at www.patchworktimes.com)  in her hotel room in the middle of a MOVE from Missouri to Texas.  You just can’t keep a GOOD QUILTER DOWN!!!

SECOND:

I am also working on my Patchwork Times UFO Challenge for May – my Snowflake Angel (a Crabapple Hill Design)…..here is a little sneak peek……

I have finished the beading and embroidery and am now working on the border……I just LOVE the border blocks with little 1 1/2″ half square triangles……these are the tiniest HST that I have ever made……it is going to be so cute!

THIRD:

I now have blocks for January through April for the Basket Block of the Month – a Colonial Piecemaker’s BOM.  I have made modifications and changed a couple of the blocks – but hey, two of them are results of “following directions!”

Happy sewing everyone – and Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday!

Quilty Inspirations May 2011

I had so much fun looking at all of the Quilting Blogs this week for the 100 Blocks Tour!  I am looking forward to getting this magazine when it comes out May 10!  Did any of you go on the internet tour?

Did any of you get inspired to use the featured blocks in a quilt!

Well, I have a couple of quilts that I am inspired to make…….first……:)

Bonnie K.  Hunter’s (www.quiltville.com)  WINSTON WAYS……love this block…….I can’t get it out of my head!  LOL

My third inspiration is to make another hexagon quilt – and maybe I will make a star pattern.  OH DEAR DEAR DEAR….I got this picture from someone’s blog and I DO NOT KNOW WHOSE…..I copied the picture a while ago  because I was really intrigued and now I do not know who to give credit to………..but isn’t it a cute pattern?
