I LOVE BEING A SUBSTITUTE TEACHER

Posted By on January 15, 2011

Since I moved to Virginia I have been a substitute teacher.  It is really almost always a lot of fun and you just NEVER KNOW what will happen!!!

Several years ago I went into a kindergarten class to sub and was met by a VERY LARGE NOTE that said, “PLEASE DO NOT LET THE CHILDREN  GET THE TARANTULA OUT OF THE AQUARIUM!”  I nearly fainted.  Sure enough there was a very large tarantula LOUNGING in an aquarium.  And … I DID NOT LET THE CHILDREN GET IT OUT!!!  🙂  It was very large and kind of cute and its name was CHILE…..really.

This week I was back in the SAME classroom and I just HAPPENED to have my camera with me…….so I took a picture of CHILE who went to spider heaven in 2007.    This just makes me smile…..one of the joys of subbing.  I love the excitement and the NEW EXPERIENCES……and how else would I have ever been this close to a tarantula!!!!

CHILE......pretty colorful - don't you think?

Roll Roll Cotton Boll Top Finished

Can you hear me jumping up and down and cheering?  I FINISHED MY ROLL ROLL COTTON BOLL QUILT TOP.  Oh my – I really like it!  I REALLY LIKE IT!  I wonder how many pieces of  fabric are in this quilt!!!!

Here is a close up of the quilt.  The quilt is so large that I didn’t have a space large enough to lay it out so that I could get a picture of the whole thing but the one at the top of this post gives you a general idea!       …….I just may have to keep this one for myself!  THANK YOU BONNIE HUNTER of QUILTVILLE.COM for this design.

UPWARD BASKETBALL SEASON IS HERE

Posted By on January 15, 2011

Grandangels Cooper and Sarah played basketball today as part of the UPWARD program.  What excitement…..let me tell you these kids are really fun to watch.  Everyone is so intent and plays hard!  I really enjoyed both games.  It is hard to get a good picture in the gym because of the lighting….but I did manage to get a couple.

Sarah is # 33 – and was the tallest one on her team…..she is a great guard!

Sarah was guarding #4

Sarah's team won!!!!

The younger kids do not keep score – everyone is a winner *wink wink.  Cooper is so dynamic and runs around like a chicken with its head off *what a horrible expression!!!

Cooper is #4

Cooper is in the foreground bent down!

Catherine and John both came to the game and Catherine and I were a great cheering squad!!

Catherine and John

We will be having basketball fun for the next two months – I am really looking forward to the games!

Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting January 8, 2011

Posted By on January 8, 2011

It SNOWED last night so it was a true miracle that I made it to the Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting today.  I REALLY needed to overcome my fear of driving in the snow…..(I LOVE TO LOOK AT IT BUT AM NOT SO THRILLED ABOUT DRIVING IN IT!!!)  I am glad that I was brave because I really had a nice day!

It was a great meeting – Catherine entertained us with her product finds…..and creations!  The plastic containers from the DOLLAR STORE make GREAT PROJECT BOXES……..and only $1…….and the LARGE PLASTIC BAGS with built in handles were another great $1 find.  I think that maybe you can get 3 large bags for one dollar!!!  Those dollar stores are pretty amazing.

$1 Project Boxes

$1 Plastic Bags

The itty bitty OTT light was a WANNA HAVE for all of us.    I can’t believe how bright this light is.  I really hope that I can find one but I am not so sure because Catherine had to work really HARD to get hers!

The ITTY BITTY OTT LIGHT was so cute!

The CREATION that made everyone GASP was a HOLDER for rulers made from tapestry fabric, empty fabric bolts and an empty TARGET ARCHER FARMS cereal box……..yes……..it was a really wonderful creation!

This is what she started with……

The empty bolt.....

and this is the end result!

THE MASTERPIECE

I love this…….and now I am looking forward to the program in MARCH – Catherine will be teaching us to do “SOMETHING” that we will love………so we have to remember to sign up in FEBRUARY FOR THIS!!!

We had some beautiful SHOW AND TELLS TODAY – I haven’t  included all of the pictures – but here are a couple……..

Antiuqe Quilt to be auctioned

Look at this ANTIQUE QUILT……this red, white and blue quilt is one that will be auctioned at a later time……a really beautiful old quilt that was an ATTIC FIND…..isn’t it wonderful!

Today is the date that we signed up for the retreat to be held next September.  I will get to spend my birthday at the retreat this year…..yeah!  I am already looking forward to this retreat…….it will be held at the Williamsburg Christian Women’s Retreat Center – and I believe there are still spaces available!

And….if this wasn’t enough excitement we also drew TWO CRAYONS out of a bag (we could not look – we just took what we pulled out) and these are the two colors that we must use to design our CHALLENGE QUILT to be revealed in September!  We can only use the two colors that we draw out – and the quilt can not be larger than 40 x 40.  This is really going to be fun.

Here we go - ready to see what colors we will pull out of the bag

Margaret got some interesting BATIK colors!

Catherine got great colors

I got orange and white!

THE RULES

The last “REALLY FUN THING” that we did (before a super lunch at OLIVE GARDEN) was to play QUILTO – a BINGO for quilters……..we used SMARTEE CANDIES as markers *if we didn’t eat them first!  I am glad that I don’t like Smartees…….so I ended up with all of my markers!

I am ready to play......
