Ann Smith’s NYE MYSTERY – LOVE IT

Posted By on January 5, 2011

Ann Smith designed another NYE MYSTERY QUILT for us this year  – some of the folks were actually making this at a BED AND BREAKFAST and others of us made it with our online groups…….I did it with FABRICAHOLICS ANONYMOUS.  (I had so much fun anticipating each clue and trying to GUESS what it would look like – I can only IMAGINE how much fun it must have been to be at a BED AND BREAKFAST doing the mystery!)

THANK YOU ANN – I really like this!

Mine isn’t sewn together but I have the blocks made so I thought it would be fun to show my steps – clue by clue.

January Hospitality Quilt Guild 2011

Posted By on January 5, 2011

The Richmond Hospitality Quilt Guild Meeting today was really lots of fun.  We had a record number of people attending – what a great way to start the new year.

I saw a lot of people knitting at the meeting today – so I said, “SELF, next time you should bring knitting – and just MAYBE you would get your socks done….now on my TO DO LIST for 2o11!”  Carolyn Howerton was heading to a knit shop after the guild meeting – I wonder if SHE will be knitting next time. I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I DID NOT GET A PICTURE OF CAROLYN TODAY – she was wearing a QVC jacket that I just LOVE!

The program today  featured Ann Shibut and her antique quilts.  It was just wonderful to see these quilts – many from the 1800’s!  Ann hand quilted many of the quilts herself.  I am so impressed by that and every time I see hand quilting it just renews my desire to become good at it!  I am so glad that I got to go to the meeting today!

I took a few pictures that I would like to share from her collection!

We signed up for the bus trip to the Mid Atlantic Quilt Show today at the meeting – we will be going for the day February 24.  I am really looking forward to it.

New Year’s Day Fun at Quilter’s Corner

Posted By on January 5, 2011

There was plenty of fun going on at Quilter’s Corner on January 1st.  It felt a little bit like I was traveling in the TWILIGHT ZONE because not a lot of people were out on the roads in the AM – I wonder why (LOL) – but the quilters were up early and were bright and alert and ready to create new wonders!

Catherine started the NEW YEAR 2011 by sporting her SCOTTY NECKLACE – what a wonderful work of art.  She even had game pieces from yesteryear on it *does ANYONE remember the little magnetic scotties that kissed?

Catherine and her SCOTTY NECKLACE

I will share a few of the demos from the day!  Susan showed us how to set crystals on a quilt for a little bit of pizzazz!  It really looked like a lot of fun!

Susan is about to embellish with crystals!

Can you see the sparkle?

And I LOVED the napkins that Susan made with the  new Creative Grids  ruler that helps you draw circles……..love this ruler.  (I will show you the ruler and then the napkins!)  You can also make half square triangles and flying geese blocks with it too – and NO LITTLE END PIECES TO TRIM!  I love this ruler because it has a gripper substance on  the back so you don’t have to add little pieces of sandpaper to keep it from slipping!

Creative Grid WONDERFUL Ruler

OK – so with this ruler you can draw a half circle and then with a few stitches and some strategic folding – voila – you have a wonderful double-layer CHRISTMAS TREE NAPKIN.  Of course it helps to use Christmas fabrics.  If you don’t want a Christmas tree then turn it upside down and you will have a flower shaped cone napkin.  I just have to make some of these!  Aren’t they cute?

And I had not seen the “SHRINKY DINK” trick before  so I was really impressed with the demo by Chris!  Oh and if you go to Quilter’s Corner do not ask for the SHRINKY DINK sheets – ask for TEXTURE MAGIC.

Chris shows us the BEFORE - a normal piece of fabric quilted with Texture Magic

After holding a steam iron above the fabric – it shrivels and makes a wonderful piece of textured fabric that can be made into many wonderful things.  I want to do this too!

HAPPY SEWING AND HAPPY 2011 EVERYONE!

A Pocket Full of Mysteries – HUGS AND KISSES

Posted By on December 28, 2010

I am participating in making a mystery quilt hosted by A POCKET FULL OF MYSTERIES – an online  Christmas Mystery 2010 Quilt called HUGS AND KISSES designed by Dorothy Young.  I started this one Christmas Day.

I thought it might be fun for you to see the CLUES as they unfold….

Here are the Clues….

Clue 5

Clue 6

Clue 7

Clues 8-16

Did you have fun seeing how the mystery unfolds?

Now all I have left to do is to sew the blocks together, add some borders and have it quilted……and then my FAVORITE PART …put the binding on!  But hey, my binding chair is empty – a great way to end 2010!

I always enjoy these mystery quilts – I use fabric that I already have (and I enjoy seeing fabric left over from other quilts that I have made.)  These will be my donation quilts for babies in the ICU – a community service that I participate in through my quilt guilds.

Thanks Dorothy for the fun and the great quilt design!

Quilty Stuff – Roll Roll Cotton Boll x 2 – A Bonnie Hunter Mystery

Posted By on December 28, 2010

In my spare time (when you are snowed in there is lots of time to sew) I have been having fun working on Bonnie Hunter’s Mystery Quilt ROLL ROLL COTTON BOWL and ROLL ROLL COTTON BOLL JR!)

FINALLY – today I finished 1200 half square triangles…..that is NOT a typing error….that is 600 x 2.

Here is ROLL ROLL COTTON BOLL – the picture that puts me into the 600 Club!!!

RRCB 600HST

……….and ROLL ROLL COTTON BOLL JR put me into the DOUBLE 600 Half Square Triangle Club!

RRCB JR Double 600 HST Club

And……here is part of the next step…….I just can’t wait to see how these pieces are all going to fit together!!!!  I think there are 688 little brown triangle pieces that I cut for this.  Now I need to sew all of those 1200 Half Square Triangles into rows of five and then I will be ready for the next clue – FRIDAY.

RRCB and RRCB JR Clue 6

If you want to make this Mystery Quilt – go to www.quiltville.com and look for Roll Roll Cotton Boll Mystery!  We are having lots of fun!
