Exploding Pineapple Block

Posted By on November 2, 2010

A year or so ago I took photographs of some quilters making an exploding pineapple block – and I didn’t realize this was a copyrighted pattern from a book.  I know several of you commented on my pictures and said that you liked the block.  I have removed those pictures from my blog – but don’t worry – here is how you can get the whole book!

Karin Hellaby, the very talented designer of this block has sent me the link where you can buy her  book SEW SIMPLE PINEAPPLE.  She has lots of other books too so I know you will enjoy visiting her website.

Grandma’s Day Out with Sarah Oct. 24, 2010

A Basket - Full of Breakfast in Bed

Today was the day that Grandangel Sarah and I celebrated her 11th birthday with a day – just for us.  We started out with BREAKFAST IN BED (Cooper joined the party!)

Here we are – ready for our adventures……. Sarah got to choose where we went and what we did!

A beautiful Day for Grandma's Day Out!

We started with a cruise around TOYS R US – where we found a very cute LEGO treat!

Then we were off for SWEET FROG.  I almost dreamed about this yogurt – just anticipating the creamy tart frozen yogurt with fresh fruit and nuts.  On the way, Sarah and I even PLANNED what kind of frozen yogurt that we would smother with our favorite toppings…..only to find out that SWEET FROG was not open.

NOT OPEN!!!!

We ate at JOHNNY ROCKETS INSTEAD!  I was so bummed at missing my frozen yogurt that I ordered a DREAMSICLE MILKSHAKE (I never order a milkshake!!!!)  Sarah ordered a strawberry banana one – and when the milkshakes came she tasted mine – and the rest is history (I GOT THE STRAWBERRY BANANA ONE!)  🙂  It was fun – I just pretended that we were at Johnny Rockets in Laguna Beach, CA and it was almost like being “HOME IN CA” again.

Sarah LOVED my Dreamsicle Milkshake!

NEXT STOP – the MOVIES…..to see SECRETARIAT!

Got ticket - check - coke and candy - and voila - a movie party!

Were any of you around when SECRETARIAT (aka BIG RED) won the TRIPLE CROWN in 1973?  Well, Secretariat was a Virginia racehorse and the movie SCRETARIAT is all about the Denver “housewife,” Penny Chenery, who inherited Secretariat, believed in him, and fought valiantly in a male-dominated world to spur her horse to victory.  It was so exciting.  How did they do that to me!  It wasn’t like I was really in suspense (BIG RED won that TRIPLE CROWN 37 years ago!!!)

I found a couple of pictures on the internet – isn’t this a great picture of a horse who just LOVED TO WIN!

GO SEE SECRETARIAT!

The movie was awesome – I cried so much all through it – and I even knew how it was going to end.  The drama, the acting, the music – it was just all a wonderful experience and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!!!  Just seeing the French Canadian trainer’s clothing and plaid hats is worth the price of admission!

Celebrating the TRIPLE CROWN WIN!!!

And just for the record – Secretariat is STILL known as the best racehorse ever!  And when that DVD comes out I want to buy it so I can watch it again and again!

Sarah and I had a great Grandma’s Day Out!!!!

VA Scrappers October 23, 2010

My sides are still aching from laughing so much – this seems to be a general HAPPENING when we have our once a month VA SCRAPPERS gathering.  It is always fun to get together with friends and quilt, talk, eat, shop, laugh; and of course we always spend a good bit of time OOOOHING and AAAHING over each other’s accomplishments.

Today Patsy brought a SPECIAL GUEST…..she got a NEW 8 week old PUPPY – a precious little black ball of fur named RINGO!!!  He was a big hit…..let’s face it, there aren’t too many things cuter than a new puppy or kitty!  Ringo took a real liking to Catherine!

Check out Carmen’s matching shirt and sewing machine case and her beautiful quilts!!!!!  And Catherine shared some of her VERY CREATIVE mixed media memory books.

AND TA DA….sao finished binding another quilt!  I call it MAD CITY GRANDMAMA – it is a pattern called MAD CITY MAMA from Bonnie Hunter’s LEADERS AND ENDERS book!  I made a few changes but was just drawn to those 1 1/2″ squares.

We had a good time and it was a beautiful day – sunny and cool.  Breakfast at Panera’s and lunch from Martin’s Salad Bar enjoyed OUTDOORS.  The day was PERFECTION!

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

Thread Head

This is just a snippet from one of my new favorite quilt blogs….

http://joanne-threadhead.blogspot.com/

I just love this name – Thread Head!

and there is a REPRODUCTION QUILT A LONG going on there – and this is just a sample from her blog for the third block.  I think I am going to do it with my BUTTERNUT and COLONIAL BLUE fabrics…..and other reproduction prints!

One thing I do like about this is that you are given multiple ways to set the quilt when the blocks are completed..and you can make it any size you want…….it sounds like fun – so I am going to do it!

Look at BLOCK 3 – I just copied a few lines from the THREAD HEAD BLOG – I think you will like it!

Block #3

EQ7 calls this block “Martha Washington’s Star”, it is a variation of a variable star. “Variable Star” is one of my favorite block patterns, and I know a few variations are going to show up in the quilt along!
