CALGON TAKE ME AWAY

Posted By on May 5, 2010

Does anyone remember the CALGON commercials of yesteryear?  Who hasn’t WISHED to be TAKEN AWAY ON A BUBBLE CLOUD when life gets a bit busy or challenging…..I like to call it EXCITING.  But too much excitement can make you dream of that CALGON MOMENT.

A California friend recently JOKINGLY said that a COMA  (TEMPORARY OF COURSE)  sounded like a good idea – she is very busy and stressed – and that got me thinking that a CALGON MOMENT might be a better alternative.  🙂

Did you know that you can buy CALGON scrapbooking supplies?

CALGON SCRAPBOOKING

My friend, Catherine, recently bought me some Calgon mist and I am obsessed with it.  With each spray my senses are calmed and I am wisked away to peaceful relaxation (very important after a day at school with children who are perpetually celebrating springtime!)

Calgon - take me away.....

So – the teacher is always coming out in me and I decided to look up some info about CALGON from TA DA – the Calgon website.  I didn’t realize what an impact CALGON had on our culture….just look.

And, by the way, I do not work for these folks, nor am I getting paid for this – I am just having a real, authentic walk down CALGON MEMORY LANE.

Happy Cinco De Mayo Everyone

Posted By on May 5, 2010

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO – and according to a google search here is a little bit of the history if why we celebrate May 5th!

Cinco De Mayo History

The holiday is Mexican and it celebrates the victory of 4,000 Mexican soldiers against 8,000 French forces on the morning of May5, 1862. A common misconception is that Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s Independence Day. That day is in fact September 16th.

IF YOU WANT TO KNOW THE DETAILS SO YOU CAN REALLY CELEBRATE
BY EATING TONS OF GUACAMOLE AND CHIPS…..

Cinco de Mayo is not celebrated everywhere in Mexico (it’s a regional holiday) but it is observed in America and in many countries around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.

CALIFORNIA REALLY CELEBRATES BUT I HAVEN’T SEEN THIS TOO MUCH IN VIRGINIA WHERE I LIVE NOW.  DO THE PEOPLE  CELEBRATE IN THE STATE WHERE YOU LIVE?

The battle of Cinco de Mayo took place at the town of Puebla, 100 miles east of Mexico City. According to Viva Cinco de Mayo, the French army attacked Mexico City, assuming that the Mexican army would surrender if their capital city was taken:

Under the command of Texas-born General Zaragosa, (and the cavalry under the command of Colonel Porfirio Diaz, later to be Mexico’s president and dictator), the Mexicans awaited. Brightly dressed French Dragoons led the enemy columns. The Mexican Army was less stylish.
General Zaragosa ordered Colonel Diaz to take his cavalry, the best in the world, out to the French flanks. In response, the French did a most stupid thing; they sent their cavalry off to chase Diaz and his men, who proceeded to butcher them. The remaining French infantrymen charged the Mexican defenders through sloppy mud from a thunderstorm and through hundreds of head of stampeding cattle stirred up by Indians armed only with machetes.

The outnumbered Mexicans defeated the French army in a great victory. It had consequences for America as well because the French defeat denied Napolean III the opportunity to resupply the Confederate rebels for another year.

Wikipedia informs us that the battle was significant for at least these two reasons as well. One, the Mexicans, out-numbered and out-gunned, beat a French army that had not tasted defeat in 50 years. And two, this was “the last time that an army from another continent invaded the Americas.”

I HAVE THIS DESIRE TO MAKE A BIG BUNCH OF PAPER FLOWERS AND FIND SOME MEXICAN MUSIC…….AND I THINK A  BLACK BEAN AND CHEESE BURRITO WOULD BE NICE.  I will probably just go to the HOUSE OF NOODLES before my class  with Catherine tonight…..or something like that!  🙂

TELL ME HOW YOU CELEBRATE MAY 5th……

Powhatan Steve – Quilter’s Corner – and the BEAD SHOW

Posted By on April 24, 2010

Catherine and I met BRIGHT AND EARLY and enjoyed breakfast right here – what a lovely morning.  A soft rain was falling but we were cozy inside the car having an outdoor PICNIC inside the car!  🙂  I actually enjoyed the rain this morning.
We had planned to go to the Powhatan Power Show,  but we decided that the parking field might just be a little too muddy – so we opted for an alternative adventure at Mr. Steve’s INDOOR YARD SALE  and was it ever a wonderful adventure!  Lots of giggles.

Powhatan Breakfast Site

Catherine is ready for a great day with her FLUTTERBY necklace!

I am not sure what Steve’s business is called – but he was at the Powhatan Fair Grounds this morning when Catherine and I delivered a recycled water heater and computer!

LOOK AT THESE CUTE LITTLE CABINS JUST FULL OF yard sale/antique/treasures!!!  I think he said that he was there every Saturday.  Love the cabins – love the old truck – loved all of the “GOODIES STACKED TO THE CEILING IN THESE CABINS.”  And I mean – LITERALLY – stacked to the ceilings!!!!

Steve's INDOOR YARD SALE

A WHOLE VILLAGE OF TREASURES

Now once inside I found a very old suitcase picnic basket – but wouldn’t you know it – it was way in the back and on the top of lots of other things – this called  for a special tool – and Catherine found some tubing.  VOILA – a tool!!!!    (To be perfectly honest, I thought that the basket was just not within my  realm of possession – but Catherine was way more resourceful!)

The TOOL MAKER

Look at this – do you think that it is even POSSIBLE to get that basket in the back and on top !!!!  Hey, we found out that anything is possible with the right tool!!

THE BEST BASKET IS ON TOP IN THE BACK!!!!

OK – so look at this – a real miracle!!!

Can she do it? YES SHE CAN!

WE DID IT!!!!

Catherine found an old SCOTTY PLAID COOLER – my parents used to have one that we used on vacations!  Oh how I love the memories that OLD THINGS bring to mind!!!!!

After this adventure we went to Quilter’s Corner to buy some recycled fabric – all the profits went to benefit the animals at the RICHMOND ANIMAL LEAGUE!

I took a few pictures of the fun inside QC – it was great to see lots of friends there too!

Love the scrappy quilt in the window

Lots of beautiful new fabric

A Karen DuMont Quilt with Minkee Back - sweet!

And if this weren’t enough fun  for one morning, we also went to the Bead Show at the Raceway.  OH MY!  It was my first ever bead show!!  I was just amazed, astounded, thrilled, mesmerized, excited, overwhelmed …..all of those things.  There were SO MANY gems, crystals, beads, stones, silver, handpainted pieces…..oh my.  It was ever so much fun!!!  I didn’t take many pictures – but that is because I was so busy LOOKING AT EVERYTHING!  I LOVED IT!

SO MUCH TO SEE

There was EVERYTHING IMAGINABLE THERE!

What was really amazing to me was watching Catherine pick up stones and gems and beads – and they just “MAGICALLY WENT TOGETHER.”  She has the eye.  I sure think it would be fun to do some jewelry creating!!

Talk about EYE CANDY!

We ended our GLORIOUS DAY at Ruby Tuesdays – a first time for me.  We had a wonderful SALAD BAR and Chicken Chili and Catherine shared some SEW AND TELL.  She has done some wonderful NEEDLE FELTING – all in progress, but it sure took my breath away – beautiful work!

My FABULOUS Salad

Catherine's FIRST Needle Felting

I can hardly believe that this is Catherine’s FIRST EVER Needle Felting………..FIRST!  Oh my!  If I ever do any needle felting you can be sure that it won’t be looking like this!        I sure am lucky to have a TALENTED FRIEND!!!!  🙂

GOOD DAY CATHERINE!

30’s Club Star Quilt Top is Finished

Posted By on April 20, 2010

Finally I put the 30’s Club Star Quilt (a Quilter’s Corner 30’s Club Pattern) together.  I had originally made extra small star blocks to put in where there are plain blocks, but in the end it was too busy – so now I have extra blocks to put somewhere else!

Birthday and Sewing Happenings

THIS IS A FAMILY POST  🙂

Leanna redecorated her room and moved from teeny-bopper to high school decor.  She packed her rubber ducky collection into glass vases (we got the idea from Aunt Chris who put her collection into a tall glass vase!)

First, do you want to see Grandangel Leanna’s Breakfast Table?  I put out 14 birthday candles (actually 15 if you count the little one on her cupcake!!)……DD Christi is wondering if I will be able to produce 30 plus for HER BIRTHDAY!  LOL.

14 Breakfast Candles

Actually, Nanna filled TWO of these tall glass vases (from Michael’s)…..but I only took a picture of one.

Duckies in a vase

And two tall vases were not enough – there were duckies left over to put into a covered jar!!!!!

More Duckies in a Jar

Nanna picked out some fleece for a blanket and some brown fabric for valances for her room………now decorated in hot pink and CHOCOLATE BROWN.    She did a great job of matching her new bedspread and sheets!!!

Fabric for Fleece Blanket and Curtains

ta da....Grandma Shirley Fringed the Fleece

And the valances are up…………it went pretty fast – I made this after I got home from school!!  Now the FUNNY PART is that in typical sao style I didn’t measure anything – I just GUESSED that we would need about 3 yards of fabric.  TOO FUNNY because in the end I had EXACTLY one inch and one/half strip of fabric left over.  TALK ABOUT A CLOSE GUESSTIMATE!!!!!  whew!
