Downy Quilt for Kids

Posted By on April 15, 2010

I mailed my Downy Quilt for Kids Quilt this week…..if you want to make a quilt go to www.quiltsforkids.org and they will send you a kit!  They send the fabric for the top and back and you supply the binding, the batting and you quilt it.  The quilts go to children in need!

This was a stretch for me because I usually do not quilt my own quilts – but it was small and somehow I made it through!  I even did my second machine sewn binding.  It should be good and sturdy!

I was the official chauffeur today for Leanna, sister Sarah and two friends to go on Leanna’s first 14th  birthday celebration…..we went to see Miley Cyrus in THE LAST SONG.  We all had fun.  Afterward  we had pizza and cupcakes  – what fun!!!!

Look at these happy faces!  Birthdays, friends, and cupcakes – does it get much better than this!  :):)

NEW THING – Machine Binding – Ann Smith NYE Mystery Quilt and Chicks, Checks, and Cherries Quilt Finished

Machine Binding

I tried something new today – a NEW THING – and something that I vowed that I would NEVER DO (never say never!!)  I sewed a binding on a quilt by machine.  WHY DID I DO IT?

Well, to tell you the truth, I really didn’t want to spend time holding this quilt in my hands because it is covered with butterflies (BUGS) and there are butterflies quilted into the quilt….so it just seemed like the right time to try it.  :):)  LOL

I was pretty happy with the whole process, to tell you the truth.  I just machine stitched the binding onto the WRONG SIDE of the quilt – then folded the binding over to the RIGHT SIDE of the quilt and used a SHELL STITCH to anchor it!

The quilt is an Ann Smith NYE 2009 Mystery !  This will be donated to the Country Piecemaker’s ICU project…..Sara Parrish did the expert quilting!!!  Here is a picture with Grandangel Leanna’s feet!

And I am happy to say that my Chicks, Checks and Cherries  Quilt is finished too.  This was a block exchange – Marla, Sheddy, Pam, Susan,  and sao made the blocks.  I just finished sewing buttons on the chickens for eyes and finished the binding tonight!

And in my spare time, I finished  5 PJ bottoms…………I am SO GLAD to get this off my TO DO list.  LOL.  I took some pictures – I used existing PJs to make patterns.  YEAH FOR CROSSING THINGS OFF LISTS!!!

Now there was only one problem – and I think Christi gave me Cooper’s SISTER’s pants for a pattern because COOPER’S PANTS ARE  TOO LONG….ok – I fixed them by making cuffs!!!  Too Funny!

Cooper's Pants are TOOOOOOOO LONG - what is up with that!!!!

Our Powhatan Country Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild members are  making ANIMAL CRIB QUILTS for our ICU community project and I finished mine today – SHE is very cute!  I named her LYLA!  I hope the quilt makes some little baby cozy.

I also finished another UFO – my CAROLINA STAR Christmas Quilt (one of the blocks from Bonnie K. Hunter’s Quilt CAROLINA CHRISTMAS.)  I made my FAVORITE BACK for it too…..SCRAPPY!  I have put binding on THREE QUILTS over spring break….yeah.  Another one crossed off my Fabricaholics Anonymous UFO list!  :):)

Spring Break and Sew Sew Days

Posted By on April 7, 2010

I am babysitting four cats and one dog over Spring Break and I have to tell you that they are having lots of fun helping me sew!  We are having lovely summer weather here in Midlothian and have even set some heat records for April!  It is so much fun to hear the birds singing and to see the trees and flowers blooming.

Catherine came to sew with me two days over Spring Break.  We got lots done too..even though Ruby fell in love with Catherine and would barely give her a moment’s peace….  Catherine completed the top of her Animals on Parade Quilt for the ICU project with Country Piecemakers and she had fun doing other projects as well!

We even managed a little side trip to the Goodwill to hunt for wool to felt (no luck) and we had lots of fun searching for house embellishments at BIG LOTS (a new adventure for me – whatta place!)

I got out the quilt that I pieced when I was 5 (my before going to school project!)  My Grandma Albertson cut all of the blocks and pieced the top together, but I sewed all of the 9 patches together by hand – and she INSISTED that I use a thimble too.  To this day I can’t sew without that thimble!  I don’t think I have ever photographed this quilt before.

I also got out the wedding quilt that my Grandma Reiter made for me – a log cabin made out of satin (that I accidentally found out that my DH, Max had used for a picnic in the park one day while  I was a work!!!!)

I spent one day cutting 1,250 1 1/2″ squares for a Postage Stamp Quilt swap – this should be lots of fun – Subee (in Indiana) is hosting it!  I have visions of tiny little quilt pieces floating in my head as we speak!

I am VERY HAPPY   that I got TWO QUILTS BOUND and have started on another.  WHOO HOO!

Here is a peak at all of the fun.
