QUILT SHOPS IN LANCASTER

Posted By on March 26, 2010

I just cannot believe the quilt shops that we visited in Lancaster, PA!  It was a grand experience and the prices – OH MY!

We went to The Old Country Store, Zooks, Sauders, and Weavers.  Weavers was a real experience!  The warehouse was in a barn and it was absolutely incredible.  The prices were UNBELIEVABLE……REALLY!   I think that my BIGGEST BARGAIN was the BUNCH of knitting needles – the WHOLE LOT was .25 TOTAL!!!!   I had so much fun shopping.  If I had a spare $2,000 I would have loved to have purchased an Amish quilt too…….but I didn’t!!!  LOL.

One of my very favorite things about the trip was going to the Lancaster Bead Shop.  It was intriguing – loved looking at all of the gems.  I am hoping that Catherine will teach me how to transform the gems into masterpieces!

I got a few pictures….

Lancaster Countryside and Architecture

Posted By on March 26, 2010

I know that this might sound strange – but I enjoyed looking at the countryside and the architecture  as much as I enjoyed the Lancaster Quilt Show.  PA is beautiful – I love the pastoral setting – the rolling hills, the GREEN pastures, the beautifully manicured farms, the barns, the cows, the lambs……..I could really see myself living here!  I wish I could have just stood and LOOKED at everything for hours.  It was like HEAVEN being fast forwarded before my eyes!

I LOVED the architecture – the buildings were amazing – such a mix of styles – grandeur alongside simple buildings adorned with a simple star.  I saw lots of lavendar window frames and even doors – that was something new for me!

It is not possible to photograph much of the Amish culture, but I did manage to snap a few shots.  The horse drawn covered buggies were adorable.     I LOVE LANCASTER – MEAN IT!

Catherine was a CELEB at the Lancaster Quilt Show

Posted By on March 26, 2010

Oh my goodness – I have never seen anything like this in my life.  Walking around with Catherine at the Lancaster Quilt Show was like walking around beside Eleanor Burns (who just won the equivalent of the LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN QUILTING.)  EVERYONE kept gasping when they saw Catherine’s jewelry and learned that she had not only designed, but made everything too.  I mean REALLY.  People were literally almost pouncing on her – taking her picture, bringing their friends to see her jewelry.  Actually, I think jewelry isn’t even the correct categorical representation – I think her wearable art is “fantastical.”  Ok – so how is that for mixing culture with TIGGER TALK!

Catherine was a celeb to me – as a special project the night before the show, she helped me make a special bag for my purchases at the Lancaster Quilt Show – she taught me to weave fabric!  It was lots of fun!  I can’t believe that she did this – she brought all the supplies and we made bags in our hotel room.

This trip was wonderful for a number of reasons.  First, I have never been to PA and I have been wanting to go for years!  I was not disappointed.

Second, I really enjoyed the country side and architecture – the buildings were amazing.  The Amish culture is just fasinating….pure and simple..

…and last, but not least,  I really enjoyed the infamous quotes by dear Catherine.  Here is just ONE of them.

While giving Catherine a compliment….”It is so nice to have such a talented friend….” she quickly replied  (trying to sound modest)  “I wouldn’t know about that!”  TOO FUNNY.  But even though I am officially an UNTALENTED FRIEND, I really enjoyed being with my TALENTED FRIEND CATHERINE.  You had to be there…..LOL!

Lancaster Quilt Show 2010

Posted By on March 26, 2010

The Lancaster Quilt Show this week was memorable.  The weather was perfect and most of the people at the show were so nice…..

Actually the show was HUMONGOUS.  Really amazing.  There were so many INTERESTING VENDORS (maybe more than 400) – so much to see!!!  I think I could have gone to the show EVERY DAY and still have some things left unseen!

The quilts on display were outstanding.  Some were just UNBELIEVABLE!   Karen Du Mont had lots of her beautiful quilts on display and Swirly Girls had patterns in several of the vendor booths (Susan and Chris are the designers – from Quilter’s Corner in Midlothian, VA.)

Most of the time,  photography was not allowed (that was disappointing because part of the fun for me is taking pictures and then later oohing and aahing,)  but with special permission I was able to capture a few pictures and so I will share a bit of the show here and there.

I will definitely go to this one again!  LOVED IT! MEAN IT – LOVED IT! I REALLY LOVED IT!   AQS put on this show and I think they did an excellent job!

Here are some of the highlights of the show – the quilts – the vendors and some of their cool stuff!!!  🙂

Mad City Grandmama and TTFN

I got inspired by Bonnie Hunter’s OBSESSED AND POSSESSED border that will possibly go on a quilt in her next book – go to Bonnie’s Blog at  www.quiltville.com for a peek.  My inspiration led me to start squaring up half-square triangles…….so I will be ready.  I figure I will need TONS of them for the border on a quilt.    I have been doing this for two days (I sure have collected lots of these little bonus HST!!!!)  I now have a BIG STACK each of 1 1/2″, 2″, and 2 1/2″ HST all squared up and ready!!!!!!  Is anyone else as excited as I am about Bonnie’s lastest border?

I also got my MAD  CITY GRANDMAMA blocks together – now it just needs borders and a back!  I just love these little 1 1/2″ squares.  There is something so satisfying about taking teeny tiny pieces of fabric that COULD HAVE ended up in the trash and making a quilt out of them!!!!    This is my version of Bonnie Hunter’s MAD CITY MAMA quilt in her latest LEADERS AND ENDERS BOOK.  I just love this.  I am keeping this one – unless someone in my family begs……  :)!

Mad City Grandmama

Lots of 1 1/2" squares!

I will be leaving in the morning for Amish Country.  I am excited and can’t wait to see the Lancaster Quilt Show!   I am doubly excited because I have never been to PA and I have been wanting to go for a long time!!!    I will be back at the end of the week with LOTS OF PICTURES!!!!!
