What is on my DESIGN FLOOR, Monday, January 2, 2012
Posted By drsao on January 2, 2012
It looks like I am starting the New Year with a FULL DESIGN FLOOR. My creative FLOW is in high gear and I am really having fun!
First – OUR QUEEN OF MYSTERIES – Bonnie Hunter of Quiltville – revealed the plan for ORCA BAY. WOW….it is stunning and looks like STAINED GLASS. I wonder how many pieces are in this quilt?
Since I am making two of this mystery (and I creatively named them Orca Bay 1 and Orca Bay 2….LOL) I had to choose which one to put together first….I chose Orca Bay 2…..
So…….I gathered my PIECES and got ready!
Here is the first section…..being examined by Tonto Morris (the cat!) Remember I said that my second one would be a Christmas Quilt? That is why I used greens for my little string pieced squares!
This is what it will look like when I am finished (this one is Bonnie Hunter’s Quilt – my Orca Bay 1 should look similar because I am using the same colors as Bonnie’s!)
Also on my design floor is the NYE 2o11 Ann Smith Mystery (Fabricaholics Anonymous.) I haven’t made a mystery quilt with 30’s fabrics yet – so this is the one! It is all cut and ready – this one will go on retreat to the beach with me in February!
AND THAT IS NOT ALL…..I am doing the 2012 Color Challenge (anyone else doing this with Judy Laquidara at Patchworktimes.com?) and so I have been pulling fabric for that! I don’t know YET what I am doing with the fabric – but I have found some in my stash that seems to fit!
I just might accomplish three goals at once here……
if I USE THE COLORS IN THE COLOR CHALLENGE ….
and do the 2012 FREE MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGE FOR JANUARY (which is to quilt with heart-shaped leaves)….
…..then I could donate it as an Alzheimer’s Art Quilt…..three goals in one. YES THAT SOUNDS LIKE A PLAN TO ME!
To see what other quilters around the country have on their Design Walls – go to Judy Laquidara’s website….

Happy Sewing Everyone!
Wow, you are a busy lady. Love your Christmas Orca Bay.
OH my goodness…so much quilty fun going on at your place!!
Well, you look like you’ve got as much going on in this wonderful New Year as I have LOL!!! I like the way you are planning to link up your challenges and ‘kill three birds with one stone’ so to speak! Looking forward to seeing what you do with the color challenge fabrics!
Lots of pretty projects. Where will you walk?
I *love* the bits of green you have in your Orca Bay blocks — it’s awesome! 🙂
My goodness you are busy! Doing 2 Orca Bay quilts is really a challenge! I am going to do the Color Challenge too!
Orca Bay is coming along nicely, love the green for the Christmas quilt. I’ve been thinking about the color challenge, I’ll have to give it one more look. Happy New Year!!
Oh my, your quilty energy makes my head spin.. So much pretty stuff. And I love your Christmas Orca… Hmmmm… do I see another one in my future?? Probably so…
Love your Christmas version of Orca Bay! It is a stunning quilt. Good luck on your newest projects and plans.
I love Tonto Morris! My cats love to help me on my photo shoots too 🙂
How are you going with joining the rows, are you finding the geese/ string square rows longer than the Ohio Star/ geese rows?
I think because I squared up the blocks at each step – and because I used the e-z angle and companion rulers the rows are going together pretty good…..once in awhile there is a bit of a EASE issue – but so far so good. I am loving this quilt!
Loving how your Orca Bay is coming together 🙂
wow! Orca Bay times two! Very nice!
Since I am doing the color challenge, also, I am looking forward to seeing what you do with your fabrics. I, too, am trying to meet more than one challenge with one quilt.
You have developed quite a workable plan and I admire your purpose this year. Way to go Shirley – I am doing the UFO challenge, playing with scraps this month, then throw in the Take Just 2 mystery and add Bunny Hill Cottage Houses. I just do not have an end-result purpose … I will think on this – I do know that I will be giving more away this year. I will follow along and watch your success. Judy C
