Play Days in Williamsburg – June 24 – 25, 2011

Posted By on June 27, 2011

Some of us from the Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild in Williamsburg met at Sherry’s house for a couple of GLORIOUS SEWING PLAY DAYS.  Sherry graciously opened her sewing room and shared her “toys”  – we had fabric paint, stamps,  paint sticks, stencils, shaving cream and inks, water color pens, fabric galore – you name it, we had it!  You would be surprised how much fun it is to use OTHER PEOPLE’S orphan blocks!!!!

Here are a few pictures of some of our fun!  Note Catherine’s SPECIAL HAIR BALL!  It was hysterical!  Catherine also produced some WONDERFUL FABRIC from Sherry’s stash of collected strings and threads over the past two years.  CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?  Catherine produced lots of fabulous pieces……..we enjoyed watching her create!

Not only did we have fun sewing, but we were also entertained by Mr. Gibson and Mango (the cats) and Maggie and Mia (the dogs!)  They *and Catherine* were so excited by all of the sewing activities!

I hope you enjoy the pictures…..and oh yes, just HAD TO STOP THE CAR and take a picture of the corn growing as we headed back for home!  🙂

Thanks, Sherry, for the memories!  WE HAD LOTS OF FUN.

What’s on my Design Wall, June 27, 2011

Posted By on June 27, 2011

I regret to say that I did not clear my DESIGN FLOOR item from last week (binding my JB (Jared) Takes a Wife.)  I THINK that I have a valid excuse (to tell you the honest truth, I am pretty good at producing excuses for almost anything!!!!)  My excuse?  I finished six small quilts – including the binding.  SO THEORETICALLY it is STILL on my DESIGN WALL for this week!

Here are the quilts that I did finish.  A big thank you to Sherry in Williamsburg for opening her sewing room and supplies for our quilting adventures!  I learned a lot of new things making these quilts – including how to miter binding.

#1  Celebrate Memories

Here is a picture IN PROCESS – for some reason I didn’t get a close up of it finished – but it is finished.  I used paint sticks, stencils, beading, a felt dove that Catherine cut with her accuquilt, and ribbon.  I guess that qualifies as a modern art quilt!  In this picture I was auditioning binding fabrics.

#2  Purrfect Peace

This one has lots of dimensional copper stars, yo yo’s, beads, buttons, and a cat button – love those cat buttons!

Sherry painted the fabric using star stencils!

Purrfect Peace

Sherry stenciled on the fabric that I used for the background!

#3  Autumn Delight

On this one I used three-dimensional leaves and beads.

Autumn Delight

I used an orphan block for the top and the back of the quilt.  I believe that Sherry pieced this star by hand!

#4  Purrfect Garden

(I think this one is my favorite because I have a little memorial cat garden in my backyard

– complete with little cat statutes from my SIL, Kerry.)

This one has dimensional flower parts, yo yo’s, buttons, beads, and a cat (made with an orphan block – made by Sherry!)

Purrfect Garden

The fabric that I used for the back was the result of my ink and shaving cream painting project.

SO MUCH FUN!

Back of Purrfect Garden

These first four mini quilts represent FOUR SEASONS.  Spring, Winter, Fall, and Summer.

(I could have put the pictures up in the order of the seasons….but instead I put them in the order that I made them!)

#5  The Best Nest

I made the fabric by using inks and shaving cream….the birds and the eggs are cut with an accuquilt cutter and I used bits of dimensional flowers, buttons, and beads for the worm.  Now the NEST PART is amazing.  Sherry saved threads for two years….and Catherine stitched over the mass of threads with a piece of toile on top.  Catherine made some fabulous blocks with the THREAD FABRIC and I got the left over piece for my nest!  TEAMWORK!!!!

The Best Nest

#6  Reach for the Stars

This one is made from Sherry’s stash of stenciling and I added beads, and stars.  I stamped the words on too.

Reach for the Stars

The label is made from a stash piece that Sherry made with  a stencil.

The label is from Sherry’s stash of rubbings……fun!!!!

DH’s CATS, DOG and TURTLES

Posted By on June 26, 2011

My DH loves his furry family and treats them like royalty.  I was looking on the computer tonight and saw some NEW PICTURES that I just had to share.

MEET DAISY MAY………who is guarding “HER MOUSE TENT.”  Yes – my DH makes sure that the kitties have LOTS of places to sleep … tents…..bedssssssss……. towers ………we are overrun with kitty resting places!

Daisy and her MOUSE TENT

Tonto in the tent

OOPS….looks like Tonto Morris got past the GUARD and has entered the mouse tent…..and is giving Daisy May kisses…..maybe he lured her into getting his own way (we females are sometimes such pushovers!  LOL)  BTW…..DH named that cat TONTO MORRIS!!!

NAP TIME…..look who is INSIDE THE TENT……too cute.  By the way, these two cats are from Catherine’s litter….well, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN……Catherine had a stray cat enter her house through her doggie door and deposit a little litter……:)  SURPRISES ARE THE SPICE OF LIFE!

Nap Time

Tonto the guard cat

After his nap, Tonto decided to guard some of my quilts that I have draped over an antique blackboard!

AND….Daisy decided to have another NAP in her ZEBRA BED.

Daisy in her Zebra bed

Pepper kicked her out ….. and no kisses …. just male dominance and female gentility!  I have NO CLUE why Pepper likes to sleep in the cat beds because he has SEVERAL BEDS of his own!!

Pepper likes the Zebra bed too

OH .. yes .. and if two cats and one dog aren’t enough … two turtles have ADOPTED MAX.  Tara I and Tara II came to live in our backyard three years ago and have hibernated happily ever after.  I wonder if it is because My DH, Max, feeds them cat food?

I hope you enjoyed the pictoral visit to our WILD KINGDOM!!!

What’s on my Design Floor June 20, 2011

Posted By on June 20, 2011

Remember last week when I had not ONE….not TWO…..but THREE quilts to be bound on my design floor?  Well, I knew (in my heart) that it was NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.  I mean REALISTICALLY!!

HOWEVER…..drum roll……TA DA……I did it.  And since I am on a roll……..I am putting another quilt that needs binding on my DESIGN FLOOR this week.

Here it is – my JB TAKES A WIFE #1 (it is Bonnie Hunter’s Jared Takes a Wife – but I left out the sashing and cornerstones…..and if you like the pattern go to www.quiltville.com…..it is a free pattern there!)

This is a picture of the flimsy – but it has NOW been quilted and is waiting for binding!  SO THAT IS MY GOAL FOR THIS WEEK!

WISH ME LUCK!  🙂

Friday was packed with LOTS of GIGGLES…I don’t know what got into us…..but it felt good.  First we had SIT AND STITCH and then we had a RICHMOND MODERN QUILT GUILD meeting.

Here are some highlights of our creativity.  This is Catherine’s postcard……she cut out “A NEW SONG” from the pages of a Jan Karon book….now that is creative.  I love this postcard….and I am wishing and hoping that I just HAPPEN to get this one in the postcard exchange!  WISH WISH WISH

Ginger doesn’t do paper piecing….she stamps the cutting and sewing line…..pretty innovative!!!!!

Stamp It!

Look at this CANDLE MAT…….Catherine made her hexagons scrappy – so cute…..she left the papers in and the back is so cute!
