What’s on my Design Floor, Monday, March 5, 2012

I decided to spend some significant time on my SCRAPPY GRANDMOTHER’S FLOWER GARDEN QUILT…….because otherwise this will be on my UFO list for YEARS!  LOL.  After two days of hand sewing, I am not sure how long this is going to last.  I appear to be a klutz with a needle, I guess, because I sure seem to put a lot of holes in my fingers……at least the blood doesn’t show up on scrappy fabrics and I do use a lot of reds.  🙂  How many thimbles can one hand hold!?  I already use two thimbles and a rubber finger (like they used in offices in the “OLDEN DAYS” to turn pages.)   Invariably the finger that is BARE is the one that I poke!  OK – enough whining.   🙂

Here is what I have finished so far….and now I am trying to decide whether or not to just have ONE BLACK PATH going through the garden or add a tan/gold path…..any votes?

With the black path....

With a little tan/gold path in between the black paths.....

I did get the back pieced for my Orca Bay #1 quilt – and now as soon as I get some batting I am ready to take it for quilting!

Scrappy Back - 12 1/2" squares

  1. I love the black with the gold in between, very striking.

Sorry to hear about your sore fingers. It does happen! Hopefully you will get in the swing of things very soon and not stab yourself any more. Your blocks are looking great. Congratulations on getting the orca bay back ready – can’t wait to see it all quilted up.

When I saw the first picture with the black, I thought it looked really nice. Then I saw the picture with the tan in between, and that one sings. But that would mean more hexies to do…..

I agree with Cathy…the black and tan just sings!

I am thinking that the tan/gold row will be the way to go……my friend Catherine says so too! 🙂 THANKS FOR ALL OF THE COMMENTS!

I know it will mean more work, but I like the black with gold.

I absolutely love it! I started one many years ago but sadly it is one of those UFO’s I’m not sure will ever be finished. This may just inspire me to get it out and finish it! Keep going it is beautiful!

I really like your flower garden. I have made two blocks for BOMs but have never thought of making a whole quilt that way. That said, I found that making these blocks was really good hand work for visiting with family: mindless sewing, keeping hands busy, still able to visit. Oh, and I used a leather thimble and it worked really well: it forms to the finger and doesn’t feel too odd.
