SEW SEW DAYS APRIL 10 – 11, 2012

Catherine and I had a couple of SEW SEW DAYS at my house over spring break.  We did SEW many different things – some more INTERESTING than others.  But we did have fun – so much fun that we thought we had reached 2013 already!  Yes, I HAVE TO MENTION THIS because all of us can RELATE…..ALL OF US.  Catherine signed her board 2013!

Catherine DATED and SIGNED the Fabric Board she made for SWIRLY GIRLS

Ruby *the dog loves Catherine so much that she had to SLEEP with her head resting on Catherine’s foot!

I worked on my Scrappy Flower Garden Quilt…..yes, and I KNOW that I need a haircut!

Seven flowers made so far!

SEW CAL GAL’S FREE MOTION QUILTING CHALLENGE – APRIL 2012 – DON LINN

I also worked on my DON LINN Stencil project – made with toile…..or is it TULLE?  Oh my,  Catherine and I had such a communication issue as I was explaining to her that I needed  TOILE to make a quilting stencil…..LOL.  OK – so we make a good pair – don’t you think?    One of us can’t talk and the other is in another time zone!  Here is my Don Linn Stencil…….after using the BLACK PERMANENT MARKER…..see below!

And here it is marked with a BLUE ERASABLE PEN on my fabric – ready to be quilted…..wish me luck!

VICKI WELSH AND JUDY LAQUIDARA’S COLOR CHALLENGE – MOLDY PIE APRIL 2012

The TOP of this ALZHEIMER’S ART QUILT will be named “SUNSET OVER THE SEA” and this design was inspired by my 12 year old Grandangel, Sarah, who said the Colors in the MOLDY PIE COLOR CHALLENGE FOR APRIL reminded her of a sunset over the ocean……you never know where inspiration will turn up!

This is really a joint CHALLENGE FOR SURE…..the Alzheimer’s Art Quilt Initiative will receive the donation quilt and is my inspiration for the other 2012 challenges that I am doing;   the COLOR CHALLENGE for 2012 (Vicki Welsh and Judy Laquidara) and Sew Cal Gal’s 2012 Free Motion Quilting Challenge.  Add to this the fabric collections from Catherine and me – and Sarah’s idea……well, you can’t get more collaborative than this!  🙂

Playing with the colors.....Catherine was my cutting and arrangement coach!

 Catherine’s PROJECT FOR SWIRLY GIRLS

Catherine worked hard on the FABRIC BOARD for SWIRLY GIRLS.  I can’t show you the finished product until after the SWIRLY GIRLS OPEN HOUSE on April 27  – but stay tuned – it is FANTASTICAL and SUPER FABULOUS!

Creativity at its finest!

 THE GREAT PINTEREST T-SHIRT PROJECT

AND THEN CAME THE PINTEREST INSPIRATION…….you write on a t-shirt with blue gel glue  (SOMETHING INSPIRATIONAL – I wrote “Smile and the World Smiles With YOU…” because that is what my daddy always said to me when he woke me up in the mornings!)  We couldn’t find the BLUE GEL GLUE so we used CLEAR GEL GLUE – which might have been a bad idea (like substituting baking powder and baking soda in a cookie recipe?

We washed and dried our t-shirts – preparing for the great creative project!

Wash your t-shirts first....

Use GOOD REINFORCERS under the t-shirt so you can write easily with the glue

Write your inspirational saying on your t-shirt

This part is where you hold your breath while you write with the glue...

Then you cut up another t-shirt so that you can make jewelry out of it!  SEE HOW MUCH FUN THIS IS?

Catherine did an impression of ELEANOR BURNS and tossed her trash on the floor….REALLY!  I AM NOT KIDDING!!!

Put it all into a cold water bath of black dye and leave it overnight

We decided to leave it soaking in the cold water dye so that it would be REALLY BLACK!!!

OK – so this is where I think we went wrong……PERHAPS WE SHOULD HAVE READ THE DIRECTIONS ON THE GLUE because it clearly says to get the GLUE OUT SOAK IT IN COLD WATER FOR 10 minutes – then wash.  Apparently the glue soaked out – along with our poetic writings…..

The BAD NEWS is that these shirts aren’t black nor are they CHATTY…..

The GOOD NEWS is that we have BEAUTIFUL PURPLE (LAVENDAR) shirts and potential jewelry to match.  These colors never photograph well – and I wish that I could HONESTLY say that they look better in person……..:):)

OOPS

FINISHED.........

You will notice that we EVEN DYED LACE TO SEW UNTO THE BOTTOM OF OUR SHIRTS!  🙂  I am still going to do this and it just MIGHT be my new favorite shirt!  It has such a plethora of memories…….

You laugh a little, you live and learn…..and sometimes SERENDIPITY GIVES YOU A GIFT THAT YOU WERE NOT EXPECTING!  🙂  The fun we had creating this UNUSUAL PROJECT was “PRICELESS.”  And toile is NOT tulle….and it really is still 2012!

  2. Catherine Etter says:

Okay, here goes…….. 2012 has already kicked my butt more than a few times, so as I would never wish away time, it truly was a Freudian slip to attribute my project to 2013 – next, tomato/tomauto, potato/potauto, tulle/toile – it all came out the same after a bit of translation – and we’re gonna dye and boil the heck out of our projects and THEN hit them with a bleach pen liked I was gonna’ do originally, take that Pinterest!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, this is me settlin’ down now but I truly did have the BEST last couple of days!!!!!!!!

Oh, what fun – so sorry I missed this party – so many projects, some good and some not-so-good, but I do have the utmost confidence that out of a mishap will come a beautiful opportunity to go in another direction. Please be sure to post the outcome of the cold water-soaked shirts. Proud to know you. Judy C
