sao’s Quilts Finished in 2007

Posted By on March 31, 2008

My daddy thought that it would be interesting to see all of the quilts that I made in 2007 – and I aim to please.  I will add to this section – in bits and pieces as I get snippets of time…..!

So, here goes……and I am going to officially name them right now (I am new at this – and so the naming and quilt labeling hasn’t happened until right now….well, the naming is happening now and one of my PROJECTS for 2008 is to make labels for my quilts!)

Quilt # 1 – sao 2007 – TARA LYNN’S MAY DAY SNOWBALL QUILT

sao 2008 Tara Lynn's MAY DAY SNOWBALL QUILT

Tara Lynn was born on May day (May 1, 2007) and the baby quilt was finished on May 1, 2007 – and mailed to my little grand-neice in Kansas.

Here is little Tara Lynn with her brother, Preston, on the soft minkee back of the MAY DAY SNOWBALL QUILT.

Quilt # 2 – sao 2007 – CALIFORNIA BARN RAISING QUILT

Here it is (minus the binding) – the product of my first class from Chris (3/10/07) at QUILTER’S CORNER in Midlothian, VA.

Valerie (A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT in Goochland, VA) is my wonderful long arm quilter.

This quilt now lives in Lake Forest, CA with my son Rob, and daughter-in-love, Lil.

Quilt #3 – sao 2007 – NANNA’S CIVIL WAR MYSTERY QUILT

sao 2007 NANNA'S CIVIL WAR MYSTERY QUILT

This was a MIDNIGHT MADNESS MYSTERY QUILT from the QUILTER’S CORNER….and Midnight Junior (the cat) really likes it too!

I named it NANNA’S CIVIL WAR MYSTERY because it is made from Civil War Reproduction Fabrics and because without NANNA the quilt might still be in pieces.

I must have some kind of spatial dysfunction because getting these zig zags to play nicely together was a real struggle!  Nanna (then age 10) helped me and so she claimed the quilt!

Quilt #4 – sao 2007 – GG’s KRAZY MOTHER’S DAY KWILT

This was a lot of fun to make – and it HAD to be orange – my mother’s favorite color.  I gave it to her for Mother’s Day…..and it is a STASH AND SLASH KRAZY KWILT pattern.  Out of all of the quilts that I have made, she still says hers is the prettiest.

Quilt #5 – sao 2007 – JBA’s CROW’S FENCE FATHER’S DAY QUILT

sao 2007 JBA

This is a QUILTER’S CORNER MIDNIGHT MADNESS MYSTERY QUILT and as soon as I saw the fabric, I knew that it would be for my daddy – the only color I ever heard him say that he liked is RED!  I gave it to him for Father’s Day.

And here they are together, my mother (we call her GG because she is a great-grandmother) and my father, JBA, with their lap quilts.

Quilt #6 – sao 2007 – CHRISTI’S LUCKY STARS QUILT

My daughter, Christi, saw this Lucky Star’s pattern at the QUILTER’S CORNER and I liked it too……so it became our family room quilt – it looks great on the brown leather sofa.  This is one of my favorite quilts.  I never used to like brown until I made the connection that brown is ALMOST synonymous for CHOCOLATE!!!

Quilt #7 – sao 2007 – VINCENT’S DINOSAUR PARTY QUILT

This quilt was made for my grandangel, Vincent.  He has LOVED dinosaurs his entire life (or at least for MOST of his almost 8 years of life.)  🙂

When I saw Karen DuMont’s dinosaur quilt pattern – I knew it was going to one that I HAD TO MAKE FOR VINCENT!!!!  As you can see from the picture below, Vincent LOVES it!

Here is Vincent, again, looking very grown up lounging on the BACK of his dinosaur quilt.

Susan – quilt designer at THE QUILTER’S CORNER – picked out the fabrics for this quilt – and she did a great job.  I am not really brave with the brights – yet!

Valerie – long arm quilter  at  A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT did the quilting.  I love everything she has quilted for me!    Although it is Karen DuMont’s dinosaur pattern I made my own setting design.

 Quilt #8 – sao 2007 – SARAH’S CATS QUILT

Seven year old grandangel, Sarah, drew the cats on this quilt.  I LOVED her drawings and HAD to make this quilt.  The really neat thing is that Sarah went to THE QUILTER’S CORNER with me and SHE PICKED OUT EVERY PIECE OF FABRIC in the quilt all by herself!  The people there were so nice – they brought out stacks and stacks of fabric that would go with Sarah’s INSPIRATION PIECE – the PARIS CATS.

Sarah’s Cats Quilt was quilted by Valerie at A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT!

Isn’t it sweet – and it looks so girlie on Sarah’s bed!

Doesn\'t this look girly cute!Sarah drew one of these cats in her art class in first grade

It just HAD to have a pillowcase to match!  Sarah LOVES her quilt and she is really appreciative too.  In fact Sarah LOVES every quilt that I have made!  She might be one of my biggest fans!

Quilt #9  – sao 2007 – COOPER’S RACING CARS QUILT

Four-year-old grandangel Cooper’s first memorized commercial phrase was “HOT WHEELS, BEAT THAT!”  He loves cars and the CARS MOVIES.  Since I could not find a pattern for appliqued cars, I drew my own…..so here is Cooper’s ONE-OF-A-KIND Racing Cars Quilt.

Here it is - Cooper\'s bedspread for his new room!

He is using it for his bedspread – and here he is with the matching pillowcase!

It was fun drawing the little cars – here is a close up!

Grandma Shirley drew the cars for Cooper\'s Racing Cars Quilt

The little green one is a BMW – Cooper’s dad and uncle are both BMW fans – and so the BMW had to be included in the quilt.  Maybe the BMW folks will see this and come out with a green polka dot version someday!

The back of the quilt is perfect – look at all of these cars!

Cooper just loves cars - this fabric is perfect!

Quilt #10 – sao 2007 – LEANNA’S INVITATION TO AN ANT PICNIC

In 5th grade, for a book report, Leanna had to make an invitation to an event as a connection with the book that she had read.  Leanna’s book characters sent an invitation to a picnic.  I was SO AWED BY Leanna’s drawings on her book report that I decided that it had to become a quilt…..so here is the ONE-OF-A-KIND LEANNA’S INVITATION TO AN ANT PICNIC QUILT.  Leanna chose the combination of fabrics for the blocks and I was thrilled to find the ant and watermelon fabric at QUILTER’S CORNER.

Inspired by Leanna\'s 5th grade book report.

I LOVE THE ICE CUBES AND THE STRAW IN THE GLASS BEING CARRIED BY THE LITTLE ANTS!

Here are a couple more of my favorite close ups – including one of 10 year old grandangel, Leanna – the artist and creator of LEANNA’S INVITATION TO AN ANT PICNIC QUILT

Quilt #11 – sao 2007 – SARAH’S FLYING GEESE QUILT

Seven year old, grandangel, Sarah was admiring one of the blocks that I was making for the ALL THE RAGE BOM QUILT from QUILTER’S CORNER.  In fact she LOVED it and requested that her bedspread be made from that pattern – she specifically wanted yellow, blue and white!  That girl knows exactly what she wants – together we chose the fabrics…….mostly MODAS in blues, yellows and an assortment of white-on-white fabrics.

The back is a dreamy cheerful yellow with pink and blue flowers – and the pillowcase goes with the bedspread!

Here is Sarah (7) hugging her cat, Oreo CHIPPIE Cookie and then hugging her quilt.

No quilts are ever loved quite like Sarah’s quilts are loved!  🙂

Quilt # 12 – sao 2007 – BUGGY BARN FRIENDS QUILT

This is my first block exchange quilt.  Nine of us – all QUILTER’S CORNERS quilters made a block from Alex Anderson’s Star Blocks selections and we each put them together in the setting of our choice.  I made a few extra blocks and VOILA – my Buggy Barn Friends Quilt – quilted by Valerie at A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT.

This is the block that I made (there are four of these in the quilt._ I made the Card Trick Block (actually I made four of these for my quilt – I had to practice to get good enough to give the block away – and I got the four rejects with corners that are less than perfect.  :))

Here it is – complete with matching pillowcases!

I must include a picture of at least a few of the friends at the exchange party who contributed!  They are –  Ginger and Chris

Quilt #13 – sao 2007 – AUNT AND UNCLE KITTY’S LOG CABIN QUILT

My brother Jim and his wife, Kerry, have eight beautiful kitty children and because of this, my grandangels call them Aunt Kitty and Uncle Kitty (I am sure my brother is thrilled!)

This is the LOG CABIN that I made for them – inspired by a June MIDNIGHT MADNESS MYSTERY QUILT that I made at the QUILTER’S CORNER.  This also was quilted by Valerie at A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT!

Here is a close up of the setting – I actually thought that I created it – but I later saw it in a pattern book.  🙂 Here it is  (all but the binding.)

I thought that I created this arrangement but later saw it in a book!   AUNT AND UNCLE KITTY\'S LOG CABIN - all but the binding

The back…….you can see what a beautiful job Valerie of A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT did on the quilting!

The Back of AUNT KITTY AND UNCLE KITTY\'S LOG CABIN

Here we have AUNT AND UNCLE KITTY!  They flew out to VA from MO to buy new kitties (Oreo and Midnight) for my grandangels Leanna and Sarah after they sadly lost their kitties in our house fire.  We will forever be grateful for their kindness at a sad time in our lives.

….and just for fun…..here we have Uncle Kitty (AKA Jim) with me (his sister AKA sao) in 1951!  I just couldn’t resist putting this in.  I love antique pictures – even when I am part of the “ANTIQUE.”  LOL

This is me - and my brother, JIM in 1951!

I have two other brothers whose quilts will appear in a future QUILTS COMPLETED file!  🙂

Quilt # 14 – sao 2007 – NANNA’S SEA CRITTERS QUILT

My grandangel, Leanna (11), was with me at the QUILTER’S CORNER when she saw a kit and pattern by Karen Du Mont for Sea Critters.  Nanna just fell in love with it…her new room is decorated in a beach theme and the fabrics in the kit were HER ROOM COLORS.  There was no choice but to make this quilt with a matching pillowcase!  🙂  It is just large enough for Nanna and her BFF person critters!

And this is how you know a quilt is REALLY loved – Nanna is another quilt hugger!  This makes every stitch taken worth it.  These are the precious moments in our lives. 🙂

This is how you know that a quilt is really loved!

Quilt #15 – sao 2007 – SIMPLY SPOOKY

This Halloween fabric from Red Rooster, Simply Spooky, was one of those things that shouted out to me – and when fabric SHOUTS OUT – there is nothing else to do but to buy it.  The pattern is Lincoln Logs and the kit was from the QUILTER’S CORNER.  Valerie (A NEEDLE RUNS THROUGH IT) quilted it.   I LOVE TO DECORATE FOR HOLIDAYS – and what better way to do it than with a quilt!

fabrics by RED ROOSTER from QUILTER\'S CORNER

I love any fabric with polka dots….and this has lots of them (ignore the OTHER QUILT in the picture showing up on the bottom edge – that is not a part of SIMPLY SPOOKY – just a part of the picture!)

The top of the SIMPLY SPOOKY QUILT with backing

The back has WONDERFUL polka dots!  The binding (not shown here) is scrappy – including a 2 1/2″ strip from each fabric in the quilt.

Quilt #16 – sao 2007 – LACY’S 18 YEARS BIRTHDAY QUILT

My daughter in love, Jan, thought that it would be fun to put together a quilt for Lacy’s 18th birthday on September 18th!  We had fun selecting the MOST PERFECT photos and Lacy’s brother, Chase, helped with the techy job of getting the pictures cropped, sized, and printed on the fabric!  He is pictured below – working very hard!

Here is my very beautiful and funny grandangel Lacy (we call her LUCY of I LOVE LUCY) pictured with her much loved sister, 4-year old Jannae.

Quilt # 17 – sao 2007 – PEPPER’S CHRISTMAS QUILT

Pepper is my Llaso Apso dog who my husband has convinced that he is a BOY – A BOY WITH KINGLY REIGN OVER THE HOUSE.

This is the quilt that I made for Pepper’s Christmas present.

This is a likeness of PEPPER and his toy on his CHRISTMAS QUILT

I didn’t do a very good job – but, hey, it was my first attempt at machine quilting!

PEPPER is HUGGING HIS QUILT

Pepper likes his quilt – see how he is HUGGING it here!  🙂

So there you have it – my first year of quilting and I made 17 quilts…pretty good, I would say!!

AND NOW FOR THE NONQUILT PROJECTS FINISHED IN 2007

Quilted TOTE BAG - STACK AND SLASH PATTERN

I took a class from Chris at the QUILTER’S CORNER to learn to make this tote bag.  It is made from a STACK AND SLASH pattern and it is my very first ever attempt to quilt material.  It was so hard for me to cut this QUILT TOP into a tote bag – but in the end, I did it.  I absolutely LOVE THIS BAG and use it all of the time.  When it wears out I will have to make another one.

Christi, my daughter, wanted one too – but she is afraid to use hers for fear it will get dirty!  🙂

My Second Quilted Tote Bag

This might be one of my proudest accomplishements….I made a shoulder bag with a ZIPPER!!!!!!  I took a class at the QUILTER’S CORNER!  Christi has used this one!

This is a great little shoulder zipper bag

I did my part to contribute to the GREENING of AMERICA.  These potholders were made from leftover ant fabric (Nanna’s Invitation to an Ant Picnic Quilt), left over batting, and recycled blue jean fabric!  I quilted them and put binding on (just like I would on a quilt.)

I must make some more of these because I think that they are just TOO cute!

Hot Pad Holders - with Batting and Blue Jeans

I was so excited to find this fabric to make the pillowcases to match the pillows that I made for grandangel Lacy’s 18th birthday – they are for her dorm room at UC Berkeley.

These pillows were made for lLacy\'s 18th Birthday  These Pillowcases were made for Lacy\'s 18th BDAY

My husband, Max, got a new pillow AND a pillowcase for Christmas!  I made the pillowcase – BED BATH AND BEYOND made the pillow…:)
