Chippokes Plantation Craft Festival, November 2008

Posted By on November 2, 2008

After the Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting, Marla and I went to the Chippokes Plantation Craft Festival.  Oh my – was that ever just TOO MUCH FUN.

I LOVED the ride on the Williamsburg Ferry across the James River.  I was so excited because it was my first time!  And to tell you the truth, I probably would have been just as excited even if it weren’t my first time.  I just like to celebrate life!

You will notice that I took LOTS of pictures of the ride!  There is just so much history – in the distance you can see the first JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT in 1607 and replicas of the ships – Susan Constant and the Discovery.  I could almost imagine what that must have been like – what a struggle they went through!

If the ferry ride were not enough fun, there was even more in store at the festival.  There were 59 booths of fabulous crafts!  I HAD to buy my annual Christmas ornament – a little felted wool lamb!  (You will see a picture of the lambs hanging on a little Christmas tree at the booth.)  The vendors were all dressed in Colonial Costume and the weather was perfect!   Oh my – I just get excited recounting all of the fun.

And the food – every kind of fudge imaginable – crab cake sandwiches, delicious jams – yum.  One of the highlights was the tour through the Chippokes Plantation as well as the journey through the ORIGINAL KITCHEN BUILDING where they were cooking beans and yeast rolls over an open fire.  They churned butter……I can still call up the smells!  Those must have been the best rolls ever!

I took lots of pictures inside the house – I was just amazed at the woodworking.  They had mirrors almost on every wall.  I think the young girls learned IN SCHOOL how to place the mirrors so that different parts of the house were always in view.  Isn’t it interesting to think that men and women had separate parlors?  How times have changed.

The people were so friendly and nice and just the perfect number of people…..festive but not crowded.  This craft festival is going to go on my list of FAVORITE THINGS!

I am giving KUDOS to my GRETTA GARMIN NUVI  GPS – she got us where we needed to be and Marla and I would have been LOST BIG TIME a couple of times without her!  She even told us to GET OFF THE FERRY!  Too funny!

I hope you enjoy the pictures – and remember to click on the picture for a full view!
