Dinner With Grade School Friend

Posted By on June 1, 2009

Tonight I met  with Nancy, her newly-retired-and-loving-it  husband David, her daughter Andrea, and her husband David  – at PF Changs  at Stony Point.   Nancy and I have been friends since we were 10 years old – in 5th grade – in Kansas City, Missouri.  We not only went to school together, but we also lived in the same neighborhood and had countless sleepovers!  10 years old until now – that is a LONG TIME!!!!!  🙂

Now she lives in Texas and I live in Virginia – so it was a real treat to spend some time together tonight.   The whole evening was wonderful, beginning with the part that I didn’t get lost getting to Stony Point.

I love PF CHANGS – and while my camera didn’t want to function under the dim lights – it did like the candle lit “fort made out of napkins”……isn’t it cute!?

My attention was immediately drawn away from the artistic arrangement of the napkins when Nancy ordered her iced tea.  I felt like I was on the movie set of WHEN HARRY MET SALLY.  OK – it went “SOMETHING” like this.
NANCY,  “I want ice water –
but pour out half of it.
And then I want ice tea
 – but pour out half of that..
..and I only want green tea.
Pour the half glass of ice water
into the half glass of green tea…
..then hold the sugar
and bring on a straw!”
I think I even left out a few more directives – – but I tried to remember the GIST of it!  🙂    And…..she wonders why people think she is a picky eater.  LOL.  She got what she wanted – and here we are posing with the infamous tea!

They worked so hard to make that tea just right that I just had to take another picture of it.

I felt sorry for the poor waitress – so I ordered iced water with lemon.  I think  she was relieved!  🙂
We had a good time – we barely stoppped talking long enough to eat – but my Buddha’s Vegetarian Feast was wonderful…..and so was the cutest little lemon pie-thingie dessert…….YUM…..here is the evidence that we enjoyed it!  There was BARELY a crumb left in any of the dessert glasses.

The  time flew by and we enjoyed remembering some of the highlights of our friendship – we learned to crochet together in 6th grade – she got me started doing counted cross stitch in adulthood.  I visited her in the dorm when she was going to nursing school  – we have been known to stay up all night TALKING – and one time when she visited me in CA we got caught in the middle of the LOS ANGELES MARATHON TRAFFIC – and pair that with my geograpical DISABILITIES and we were driving around downtown LA FOREVER just trying to get out of town!
Nancy’s daughter and SIL seemed to enjoy themselves too – or did we drive them crazy??

After a couple of group photo ops we said goodbye until next year!  It was a wonderful night – and Nancy was very happy that I wasn’t wearing black – my trademark color (purple is her favorite color and she reminded me that our high school colors were purple and gold.)
OH MY – no, you won’t see me in a purple and gold outfit NEXT YEAR!!!  🙂
But Nancy – do you remember the BLACK PEDAL PUSHERS (they weren’t called crop pants in the olden days) and the black and white striped shirts that we had – MATCHING – and my mother had the same outfit.  I wished I still had that picture of the three of us.  Whatever prompted us to all three dress alike?
I can’t remember that part – but it is a FUN MEMORY!
