Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting January 8, 2011

Posted By on January 8, 2011

It SNOWED last night so it was a true miracle that I made it to the Colonial Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Meeting today.  I REALLY needed to overcome my fear of driving in the snow…..(I LOVE TO LOOK AT IT BUT AM NOT SO THRILLED ABOUT DRIVING IN IT!!!)  I am glad that I was brave because I really had a nice day!

It was a great meeting – Catherine entertained us with her product finds…..and creations!  The plastic containers from the DOLLAR STORE make GREAT PROJECT BOXES……..and only $1…….and the LARGE PLASTIC BAGS with built in handles were another great $1 find.  I think that maybe you can get 3 large bags for one dollar!!!  Those dollar stores are pretty amazing.

$1 Project Boxes

$1 Plastic Bags

The itty bitty OTT light was a WANNA HAVE for all of us.    I can’t believe how bright this light is.  I really hope that I can find one but I am not so sure because Catherine had to work really HARD to get hers!

The ITTY BITTY OTT LIGHT was so cute!

The CREATION that made everyone GASP was a HOLDER for rulers made from tapestry fabric, empty fabric bolts and an empty TARGET ARCHER FARMS cereal box……..yes……..it was a really wonderful creation!

This is what she started with……

The empty bolt.....

and this is the end result!

THE MASTERPIECE

I love this…….and now I am looking forward to the program in MARCH – Catherine will be teaching us to do “SOMETHING” that we will love………so we have to remember to sign up in FEBRUARY FOR THIS!!!

We had some beautiful SHOW AND TELLS TODAY – I haven’t  included all of the pictures – but here are a couple……..

Antiuqe Quilt to be auctioned

Look at this ANTIQUE QUILT……this red, white and blue quilt is one that will be auctioned at a later time……a really beautiful old quilt that was an ATTIC FIND…..isn’t it wonderful!

Today is the date that we signed up for the retreat to be held next September.  I will get to spend my birthday at the retreat this year…..yeah!  I am already looking forward to this retreat…….it will be held at the Williamsburg Christian Women’s Retreat Center – and I believe there are still spaces available!

And….if this wasn’t enough excitement we also drew TWO CRAYONS out of a bag (we could not look – we just took what we pulled out) and these are the two colors that we must use to design our CHALLENGE QUILT to be revealed in September!  We can only use the two colors that we draw out – and the quilt can not be larger than 40 x 40.  This is really going to be fun.

Here we go - ready to see what colors we will pull out of the bag

Margaret got some interesting BATIK colors!

Catherine got great colors

I got orange and white!

THE RULES

The last “REALLY FUN THING” that we did (before a super lunch at OLIVE GARDEN) was to play QUILTO – a BINGO for quilters……..we used SMARTEE CANDIES as markers *if we didn’t eat them first!  I am glad that I don’t like Smartees…….so I ended up with all of my markers!

I am ready to play......

A SUPER FUN HAPPENING IS COMING UP

Augusta Cole is hosting a CUTTING BEE on January 29th.  I have done this the last three years and it is so much fun…..we each take 4 1/2 inch and 2 1/2 inch strips of fabric and we trade them to make a scrappy quilt…..August will provide the patterns and there are lots of quilts to choose from

…here is the announcement………and I think there is still room!

In case you can’t read this you can get information from Augusta  by e-mailing her at

augustacole@yahoo.com

or you can go to her website at

I hope to see you there – Catherine and I are both signed up……..:)

What a fun day you had at guild and it always looks like everyone has such a good time. I wish our guild was during the day instead of night as I do not drive at night or on interstate in Raleigh so miss a lot of meetings unless I catch a ride.

The quilts pictures were beautiful, as usual, and I am seriously thinking about ordering the “Dashing Through The Snow” kit. I love embroidery and pieced quilts.

How was the cereal box used in Catherine’s ruler project?

If I had gotten orange and white crayons – first, I would have been very disappointed since I do not like the color orange – second, I would have panicked about what to make from colors I do not like – and thirdly, I would have used burnt orange, created a big beautiful Tahitian setting sun and said to myself , “get over it, this will be an adventure out of your comfort zone.” I sure am getting brave looking at 70 in the face – bring on the adventures.
