What’s on my Design Floor …. June 13, 2011?

Posted By on June 13, 2011

I made myself a promise that I would never let quilts that are  AFBB “All Finished But the Binding” sit around and stack up.  I don’t want a stack of quilts to fill up my binding chair like  last year.    BUT ALAS, I think it is happening again!  Binding is my least favorite part of quilt making and I have TRIED sewing the binding on by machine – but to be honest, I just don’t like it as well as when it is sewn by hand in the traditional method.  I am trying to be positive though and so instead of saying ” I DO NOT LIKE BINDING” I am now saying that it is my least favorite part.

SOOOOOO…….this week on my design floor I have decided that THREE quilts should get their binding on………so that is my goal!  I have 3 or 4 more ready for binding too – but I didn’t want to overwhelm myself (as if 3 quilts wouldn’t already do that …..:))

The first is for my grandangel, Caden, for his high school graduation.  He has been a Green Bay Packer’s fan forever (since he was a young boy anyway)  – so I decided to make the quilt in the SUMMER JEWELS PATTERN but in Green Bay Packer colors!  Summer Jewels is a pattern from Augusta Cole’s Cutting Bee!     (Yes, those are my toes in the picture – I was standing on the quilt….LOL)  Do you like the footballs in the quilting pattern?

The second is my Pinwheels and Posies Quilt…..this is for my great-grandangel (someday when I have one!)  I don’t even have a grandangel who is married yet – but with 17 grandangels, I figured that I should get an EARLY START on the great-grandangel quilts!  This was a mystery quilt started a few years ago with my Powhatan Quilters group!    I like all of the tiny pieces – but 1 1/2″ half square triangles are probably as small as I would want to try!

And the third quilt to be bound is also for another FUTURE Great Grandangel…..my Eleanor Burns Scrappy Quilt #3

All three of these were quilted by Karen Murray.

So, that is what’s on my DESIGN FLOOR THIS WEEK.  If you want to see what is on the Design Wall of quilters across the country go to Judy Laquidara’s website….

Oh goodness, those are adorable. I love the packer quilt (I’m a packer fan myself) and need to make one for one of my grand angels (I love that!) for Christmas. I also love the idea of having a stash of the baby quilts. Get the binding on those beauties!! You can do it!

I also have a few “football” quilts to do, one of which is a Greenbay quilt.

    Thanks,

Okay now Shirley – we have talked about those bindings before – you have to complete the job in order to have the bragging rights. Get going girl and believe how happy it will make you because you did. Sheetz, boom, bah !!! I was a cheerleader in my former life!!! Judy C sends you her hot and humid best wishes.

  4. Oh buddy, works o’ art and heart, you never cease to make me smile – sooooooooooooooooooooo proud of you and remember, there is nothing greater than the hands that bind, sorry, ties that bind, but yes, I had to go there for YOUR benefit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beautiful quilts! I don’t mind the binding, I just hate cutting out all the pieces.

I agree that binding is not my favorite either: it’s a lot like hemming a dress which I never liked to do. I do machne bind children’s quilts because I think it is stronger and can take the wear and tear better. But I hand bind adults quilts and the ones I make for me (I’m an adult, too).

    Hi dear!
I was recently received a kick in the butt to get back into my quilting space, and I’m inspired to make a Packer quilt. After a quick google search, I was lead to your blog post.

Inspiration found! I’m a bit fan of Jewel quilts 🙂
I’m hoping my quilt turns out just as lovely as yours.
