eQuilter Quilt Relief

eQuilter *Hurricane Sandy – 5000 Quilts*Nov 5, 2012We are very fortunate to have Timeless Treasures Fabrics open up their
warehouse to receive and process packages!

Many thanks to owners Ellen and Dave Brown, for partnering with us on this massive relief effort.

With our goal of 5000 quilts for Sandy victims, this is going to be a HUGE
effort, and we ask all of you generous quilters to PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE GUIDELINES and watch for our updates.

After carefully reading through all of our guidelines, if you STILL have a
question, please do NOT contact Timeless Treasures.

All queries should go directly to eQuilter Customer Service at:
service@eQuilter.com

Please understand that we want to get this set up correctly from the start
so the quilts make their way to those in need as fast as possible…but we
also want to make sure the quilts can safely be delivered to those MOST in
need.

QUILT SIZE:
I’d like to suggest that you make bed-sized quilts for families who have
lost everything.

The smaller sizes below would be a minimum size for that size bed – the
larger size is obviously a more generous sized quilt.

Small Twin – 65″ x 85″
Larger Twin – 75″ x 98″

Small Double/Full – 80″ x 88″
Large Double/Full – 83 x 106″

Small Queen – 86″ x 93″
Large Queen – 102″ x 112″

We will of course accept crib, lap or king size quilts, but we suggest you
aim for a twin, full or queen size if possible.

SUPPORT:
We are also working with Mission of Love to get a truckload of relief supplies to those in need before the holidays.

If you wish to support this project but cannot donate a quilt, please
consider donating money to Mission of Love to help with their costs, and
also to increase the amount of disaster relief supplies we can include with
this shipment. You can donate with Paypal or a credit card on their site.
http://www.missionoflove.org/donate/donate.htm

This will add to the money that eQuilter will give for additional
supplies, and shipping from Ohio to the disaster area.

Also, when you make a purchase at eQuilter, you can indicate that your
2% for charity will go to Mission of Love.

What kind of fabrics should I use?

Think about making something that will bring beauty and peace to the
recipient, who may have lost everything they owned.

Consider backing it with flannel if you have it on hand, for warmth.
Don’t be afraid to piece together the batting from your batting scraps (butt
the ends together and join with a zigzag stitch) or even piece together the
backing.

Should I label my quilt? How will they know who made it?

Be sure to put your name, address, and a message of Hope on a label,
on the backside of the quilt. Even if you don’t hear back from the recipient,
they will surely read your message of caring. Use a permanent waterproof
pen like a Pigma or Sharpie, write on a light colored fabric, use a double-sided
fusible and hand-tack for security.

Can I send other items like baby clothes or diapers? What about Fleece
blankets? Crocheted blankets? Pillowcases? Stuffed Animals?

At this time we’d like to focus on the most urgently needed supplies.
Please send either quilts or donate money to Mission of Love to help pay for
disaster relief supplies or other basic needs. If you wish to donate a pillowcase,
that can be the cover for the quilt.

How do I know my quilt will be delivered to a hurricane victim?

eQuilter and Mission of love have partnered to deliver quilts and
disaster relief over the years, to 9/11 survivors, Haiti earthquake victims, Katrina survivors, Pine Ridge SD orphans, and Japan tsunami survivors. We have a track record of coordinating and distributing large numbers of quilts in a safe and timely manner.

We are working to identify a short list of established organizations to help us distribute to those in need. To avoid theft or fraud, we will not be working with individuals: unfortunately in the past we’ve been approached by individuals claiming to represent those in need, when in fact they were trying to siphon off quilts for personal gain.

Our commitment to the quilters who donate quilts, is that we will identify authentic relief organizations and make sure the quilts are personally distributed.

Will eQuilter donate fabric to a guild or group making quilts for
Hurricane Sandy survivors?

If you are a local, *established* Colorado guild and have a project to make and
donate quilts to this effort, contact us about picking up a box of
scrap fabrics. Please do not request us to ship scraps, or give to informal
quilt groups. We may also have batting and backing end pieces that can be
joined together.

Will eQuilter help to promote other Hurricane Sandy quilt projects?

Honestly, our plate is totally full promoting and organizing our
project. We encourage you to get involved in other projects with local *trusted*
entities, but because there are so many other groups doing similar
projects, we will stick to promoting this project. We don’t want to confuse or disappoint
anyone!

Can you post my pattern design for others making quilts?
We appreciate your generosity, but we need to stay focused on the
project details on these pages. Our quilter friends don’t seem to have any
lack of ideas for comfort quilts!

Is it OK to use your logo or image “Hurricane Sandy Quilts” with the link
applied to it on blogs and websites?

Yes it is ok to post the project logo and LINK on blogs and websites.

We encourage you to pass the word to others, but make sure they go to this
information page so they can follow our guidelines and help this huge
project to be efficient and successful!

I live outside the US. Can I still participate?

For those of you living outside the US, yes you can ship directly to Timeless Treasures, or you can drop off in person to Timeless Treasures in New York City, or to eQuilter in Boulder, Colorado.

IMPORTANT: Please read all of this information carefully and if your
question is not answered, you can contact eQuilter Customer Service at

Yes, we ARE initiating a disaster relief quilt drive for those affected by Hurricane Sandy!

The events of the past week have been so unbelievable. I will start by saying – for all of you affected by Hurricane Sandy – our most sincere thoughts and prayers go out to you and your families, and your communities.

We have been inundated with messages from all over the US and indeed around the world, expressing concern, and asking “how can we help?”…and and we are humbled at how many have reached out to us, asking us to coordinate another quilt drive for the hurricane victims.

The answer is – yes of course we will coordinate another disaster relief effort. I have asked the director of Mission of Love to help us again, and Kathy has agreed.

So tonight I am issuing a challenge to our friends, customers, our guild contacts, and anyone else who wants to help:

We are going to collect and distribute 5000 quilts to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

We will work to make sure that the quilts go to those most drastically affected by the hurricane’s destruction.

Right now almost all of my east coast contacts are dealing some difficult aspect of post-storm trauma. Some are “just” dealing with no power, no heat, no water, no food and no gas. All of this with another storm bearing down on the area.

Others have had their cars smashed, their boat washed out to sea, and the worst so far is one of our industry’s beloved talents has had her house smashed by a tree…but they escaped with their lives. Another contact had a neighbor killed by a falling tree. They all say – they feel so lucky not to have sustained the devastation suffered by their neighbors.

From what I am hearing from my east coast contacts, the destruction and power outages are so widespread, that we can’t possibly comprehend the scope of the situation.

As this quilt drive comes into focus, as I get in touch with my various industry contacts, I will update this page daily. There will be another detailed update in my Creative Nudge on Tuesday night, so watch for that as you stay up to watch Election Returns. (It is almost over – yeah!)

In case you are new to eQuilter, in addition to raising over $1 million for charity over the years,
http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/Charity.html
we have coordinated many thousands of comfort quilts donated and delivered over the years for 9/11, Katrina, Haiti and Japan tsunami survivors.
http://www.equilter.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/quiltsforjapan.html

Feel free to share this link for our project, with any individual or guild who you think might be interested in participating. The bottom line is – yes you can start planning and making the quilts you’d like to donate to Hurricane Sandy victims.

Our humble and sincere thanks to those of you who have helped in the past, and those of you who will help with this effort.

I will be posting details and guidelines as quickly as possible.

It has been my experience with this type of disaster, that bed-sized quilts are what is most needed.

We will accept lap-sized quilts and crib quilts, but we really encourage you to send at least twin or full sized quilts for those who have lost everything. We want to keep these people WARM for the winter, so if you can send it soon that is best, but we will continue this project for many months.

We will not be accepting afghans, pillowcases, or other non-quilt items. We want to stay focused on our goal of collecting and distributing 5000 quilts.

See our page for last year’s quilt drive for Japan, if you’d like to get a preview of how this project will unfold.

I am in the process of putting together a quilt drive for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.

After quilt drives for 9/11, Katrina, Haiti and Japan – we are very fortunate to have Mission of Love working with us again.

I am in the process of communicating with my corporate contacts, both in and out of the quilting industry, to find warehouse space to receive large quantities of quilts.

We have one large NY manufacturer so far, who has offered to be a collection point. So many of my contacts are without power, so they can’ really respond until they stabilize their own situation.

We are also working our network of *trusted* contacts, for distribution points. As you may be aware, one of the most critical aspects of a project like this, is having a trusted contact on the other end to manage the distribution of the quilts, so those who are in the most need, will receive the quilts in a timely manner.

THIS RELIEF EFFORT WILL CONTINUE FOR MANY MONTHS! s – so if you can send a quilt now or in the next month or two – anything will be accepted.

Thanks to everyone who has offered to help. We will need lots of help from the start to finish, from top to bottom.

I will be updating you all in the bi-weekly eQuilter newsletters, and I will be updating this page daily. In fact while we are getting this off the ground I will update more than once a day as needed.

After being in contact with friends in NY, NJ and PA, it is clear that not all of the devastation has been reported on the news yet.

My heart is breaking for all of those affected, and I know you feel the same way, so lets see what we can do together.

THANK YOU!!!

Luana
