Comfort Quilts for Japan

Posted By on March 19, 2011

Happy National Quilting DAY….and stay tuned for news from my trip to the Lancaster AQS QUILT SHOW.

But….in the meantime, I wanted to get this posted QUICKLY because I know that many of us have heavy hearts about the Japanese tragedy.  They sure could use some comfort quilts.

I got this information from Bonnie Hunter’s blog at www.quiltville.com and I thought that some of us might be able to help the people in Japan by sharing COMFORT QUILTS. (For more information go directly to Bonnie Hunter’s website – and SPREAD THE NEWS!)

Send new quilts of any size from baby to adult to:

Dana Jones
Quilters Newsletter

• Mark your box: “Quilts for Japan.”
• Send quilts as soon as possible and no later than April 30, 2011.
• Enclose your name, address, phone number, and email address with the quilts.

We did it for Katrina…we did it for the flooding in the midwest. We did it to help the Australians recently. I know we have it in us to help those in Japan as well!

***UPDATE*** This just in:

I emailed with Naomi Ichikawa today. She has asked that if you are sending quilts directly to Japan, that you do not send them until May 1 at the earliest. Please watch this blog for regular updates on this time frame as things are changing daily in Japan.

If you are sending quilts to Quilters Newsletter [in Colorado] and do not want to write “Quilts for Japan” on the box, please enclose a note that says this. We receive many quilts in our offices and will only send quilts to Japan that we know are intended for Japan.

Please send only new quilts.

Busy as Can Be Redwork

Posted By on March 12, 2011

My “sista” and quilting friend Bonnie sent me a link to BUSY AS CAN BE where there is a darling FREE REDWORK PATTERN for a tea towel ….  LOOK!  Isn’t it cute.

You can get a free pattern by clicking on my BUSY AS CAN BE BUTTON and posting the button on your blog or by signing up to be a follower……I LOVE THIS!  You will enjoy this blog as well!

QUESTION:  I am relatively new at embroidery – how do you do this so that the BACK of the tea towel looks nice?

Thanks, Bonnie, for the tip!!!!

Socks, Facecloths AND REDWORK WHOO HOOO

Posted By on March 10, 2011

Now that I am able to stay awake more than a few hours a day my idle hands have been having fun……..JUST LOOK.  I am posting on my laptop and am not able to distribute my pictures to go with my descriptions – but maybe you can figure it all out.  🙂

ONE OF MY  KNITTED SOCKS IS NOW COMPLETED………..I am delirious with happiness.  The interesting thing is that I am struggling with the second one.  It appears that I was “MORE RELAXED” when I was taking pain pills and now that I am “NORMAL” I can’t remember how I did it!  BUT, I am making progress, it is just more of a struggle the second time around……:)

I knitted two facecloths.  One has a chevron pattern (I got the pattern online) and the other one I made up.  I imagine that there is a pattern out there somewhere but this one came out of my head!

Catherine took my SUMMER JEWELS quilt to A Needle Runs Through It (long arm quilter) to be quilted…..the backing fabric is kind of cute.  Catherine and I searched and searched and SEARCHED for the right fabric with just the perfect colors…….

My Colonial Piecemaker’s Baskets Block of the Month for March is pictured as well.

Here are some of my Roll Roll Cotton Boll Jr. blocks….I finished all 30 and today I will start assembling the top of the quilt.  I am plugging along, slowly but surely!!!

I am so excited……my FIRST REDWORK BLOCK IS COMPLETED.  Thank you so much, Judy of NC, for this wonderful gift.  I have wanted to do Redwork for ages and this was really so much fun.  When I go to Lancaster next week I am going to look for a lightbox so I can do more!

ANYONE ELSE GOING TO BE AT THE AQS Quilt Show in Lancaster next week?  I just love PA.  I won’t be taking classes so there will be time to LOOK AT EVERYTHING.  I am counting the days – and with Catherine, Margaret and Ellen, how could it be anything but fun!?

A Flashlight Cover – a Hoodie for a Microphone – or a SOCK?

Posted By on March 3, 2011

I have been entertaining myself by knitting…….thanks to Judy (her special pattern) and with the help at times of TWO CIRCULAR NEEDLES as well as STRAIGHT DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES…..I have now knitted ….well, I am not sure……is it a flashlight cover?   ….or a puppet with a big mouth?  ….or maybe a hoodie for a microphone?

YIKES….

After turning it right side out, I think I am on the way to making a SOCK….A SOCK!!!  I am on PAIN MEDS and I AM KNITTING A SOCK!   (I have NO IDEA how I managed to knit it wrong side out….but hey….I am HAPPY!  Seriously I would like to know where I went wrong!?)

If I weren’t supposed to be QUIET I would be doing the happy dance!!

Knitting Socks, Crocheting and Quilting News – before GOING DARK

Posted By on February 23, 2011

Someone asked me today how I was doing on my sock knitting project – well, the answer is JUST GREAT!  Well, sort of just great!  I have 5 1/2 inches of ONE SOCK completed and  I decided to share a picture of it before I rip it out and start over (AGAIN!)  You may not be able to tell from the picture but this sock  is VERY SMALL…..it might fit our dog, Ruby……however I am NOT in the RIGHT FRAME OF MIND to finish this sock and then make three more!

The sock that ALMOST WAS!

On a more positive note I am NOT going to need to rip out my crocheted pineapple baby afghan – this is for my first great-grandchild (and no I am not expecting one and none of my grandangels are even married or THINKING about babies yet – but with 17 grandangels I figured I should start early!)   Thanks Subee for directing me to this pattern – I love it!

And I have completed my block for the Country Piecemaker’s Quilt Guild Chrismas Star Quilt project…..

Country Piecemaker's Christmas Quilt Block

And…….ta da…..my Colonial Piecemaker’s Basket Block for February is finished!

Colonial Piecemaker's Basket Block for Feb. 2011

And now my BLOG IS GOING DARK for awhile (not to be confused with going to the dark side!)  I have reserved a vacation suite (do you like my positive thinking?) at the hospital for a little repair work on my INNARDS.  I will be back in full force soon…….TTFN!
