OLD VIRGINIA ROAD QUILT, PURPLE BRAID PARADE QUILT, and PINEAPPLE CRUSH

Bonnie K. Hunter’s LABOR DAY MYSTERY QUILT 2008 has begun – OLD TOBACCO ROAD QUILT

The quiltville gang is up and running with Bonnie’s new mystery.   It started last night and remember, it is NEVER TOO LATE to sew along with us.  On  her website (WWW.QUILTVILLE.COM) Bonnie writes..

“I love the old tobacco drying barns that I see everywhere. In NC it seems that old buildings are never taken down, they just stay there until they fall. I would love to do a whole picture portfolio on old farm houses and tumbling down barns.  I just love them! The inspiration for the name of the quilt came from the September 2008 issue of North Carolina’s  “Our State” magazine. It’s a beautiful magazine with great photography and really interesting articles on the history of tobacco farming. It became the jumping off point for my designing process in this mystery.”

Aren’t the colors of the tobacco drying in the fields beautiful?

I am jumping right in with the new mystery fun but have named mine OLD VIRGINIA ROAD.  After living in California (where they do not experience the TRADITIONAL change of the seasons) I was THRILLED when I moved to Virginia four years ago to see the brilliant FALL COLORS produced by the trees transitioning into winter in Virginia.

MY FABRIC COLORS
My main colors are shades of deep reds, dark gold and tans, browns and blacks….with scrappy accents of tan, gold, pale yellows, and cremes.  I am including some dark yummy plaids that I got at the WOODEN SPOOL on my recent trip to Kansas City, Missouri.

I have completed my 182 four-patches and my 8 half square triangles……and I think that I am going to really like this one.  Bonnie says the next clue may be up tonight!  yeah!

Purple Braid Parade Quilt UFO

And – so as not to feel guilty and ruin the fun of starting the new mystery quilt, I finished a UFO that I started in July 2007 – thanks to my friends Ginger and Marla for selecting the fabric for the quilt.  Even though purple is not my favorite color, I am very pleased with the outcome.  It is now ready for the long arm quilting process – Sara Parrish has agreed to do it for me!  The back will be deep purple – the same as the border sashings in between the braids.  Did I mention that I made the braids by hand…..my vacation project for 2007.

I was wondering if you are doing the new mystery. I love your colors. I’m starting mine tomorrow. I had to get my retreat quilt done first. the race is on!

Can you please e-mail me your purple braid parade instructions and measurements to me? I am making a purple quilt for my 87 year-old grandmother for free as her birthday present and I have never seen anything more beautiful in my life. I am a brand new quilter. I have just finished a quilting course in high school and am constantly on my sewing machine and up for a new challenge.

Hello, I was looking for a pattern for a quilt for my grand daughter and we both absolutely fell in love with your purple braid parade quilt. Is it possible to get the pattern from you or the information of where I can get the pattern from? Thanks a lot! Beautiful quilt!
