The Giant Dinosaur

Posted By on February 8, 2010

I keep forgetting to post a picture of a GIANT DINOSAUR that I knitted.  In 2005 my grandangel Vincent asked me if I could knit him a dinosaur.  He has always been one of those children who LOVES dinosaurs and can actually pronounce all of their correct species names!

Feeling pretty confident that I was safe and there would NEVER BE A PATTERN AVAILABLE for a giant dinosaur (because in my entire liftime I had only knitted FLAT things like afghans and a few sweaters GONE BAD) I said that I would be HAPPY TO KNIT HIM A GIANT DINOSAUR  if I had a pattern.  His mom, who is brilliant at finding things online, worked her magic.

The REST IS HISTORY – before long a pattern arrived in the MAIL – a pattern for a six foot long dinosaur (counting the VERY LONG TAIL)…..and YES this really is a GIANT DINOSAUR – just like he asked for.  IT TOOK ME FOUR PLUS MONTHS TO KNIT IT AND I WORKED ON IT DURING ALL OF MY SPARE TIME!!!!!  Vincent, who still loves dinosaurs, loved it (although I must admit that I almost fainted the first time I saw him swing it around his head by the tail – but hey, it was made to be loved – I was only hoping that it could survive long enough to get LOTS of love!!)

This picture was taken last summer.  The GIANT DINOSAUR  is still alive and well after 5 years!

I learned a lot of NEW STITCHES.  I was VERY HAPPY in the end, that other than the fact that it was blue, it did RESEMBLE a dinosaur.  Now, I ask you, why am I having so much trouble knitting a SMALL PAIR OF SOCKS (it is on my goal list AGAIN for 2010!!!!)  And, just for the record, it is the ONLY KNITTED ANIMAL that I have ever produced although I did crochet one giant hippo and two giant rabbits!!

And to answer your question, yes, Vincent got a DINOSAUR QUILT!  It is a Karen DuMont pattern but I put it together with my own setting.  This picture makes me smile.  You can tell if someone LOVES a quilt if they fall on the ground and hug it!  :):)

  1. You are really something gal, something wonderful, something kind, something caring, something inspirational, something amazing, something simply WOW and WOW again and to the moon and back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reminds me of when John and I married and something born out of innocence and naivety – I just PRESUMED my oldest and dearest friend, Pat, in addition to Pat and John G. being my absolute salvation, in soooooooooooo many ways, that without having ever created even a small decorated cake, would naturally create my wedding cake! Occasionally we will recall such moments in our treasured relationship, me patting her on the shoulder, telling her she could do it, even as she sobbed with the evolution of each and every rose petal………… It MUST be love……………….
